    3. Hi Bob Just got in late and found your message. You are only the second sixth cousin we have found! (The other descends from Thomas THOM(P)SON's brother, Giles and lives in USA.) Dawn and I are descended from their brother, William. We are in contact with numerous descendants of William in UK, USA and Australia. You must get together with us and let us extend our trees. Bed now, I'm sure Geoffro will start the ball rolling tomorrow night. You can investigate most of our known tree on Geoffro's page: http://www.fortunecity.co.uk/amusement/adrenaline/17/ Keep in touch Doug Thompson (Steyning, Sussex - but born in Bristol)

    2. Geoff Brightman
    3. Hi Bob, Make sure you are sitting down when you read this. Later tonight I will post a full and proper reply to your message. Firstly, though, welcome to the Hawkesbury list. Secondly welcome to the THOMPSON family. My partner Dawn THOMPSON and your other newly found cousins Doug T and Marilyn will all say hello to you later I am sure. If you don't ring me first either tonight ( I'll be up for a few hours yet so don't worry) or tomorrow morning then I shall telephone you when I arise from the depths of my pond. We're off to the GFHS fair at 11am tomorrow and will probably not return to Bristol until about 6 or 7pm. To whet you appetite your Thomas THOMPSON was one of 8 children of William THOMPSON and Elizabeth ALLEN. William came to Hawkesbury in 1722/3 after finishing his apprenticeship. Cousin Marilyn is also going to be in Gloucester I think.... Doug won't be........but he will be nicely surprised when he sees your message.....as was I. So the telephone numbers are 0117 938 1338 Fax 0117 983 0700 Mobile 07932 898 902 or try shouting because you live about a mile away. Geoffro The Pond Dipper

    1. [[Hawks]] THOMPSON - COOPER - TAVINDER - TOGHILL - COTES
    2. R.P. & A.L. Lawrence
    3. Hi All My gt-grandmother was baptised Rosina COOPER at Hawkesbury on 30th October 1853, the youngest daughter of Thomas COOPER (1812 - 1854) and Elizabeth nee TAVENDER (1815 - 1891). Rosina moved to London in the 1870s, where she married Daniel KEMP, a postman. She died in September 1889, shortly after the birth of her third child. Thomas COOPER was the son of Joseph COOPER (c 1756 - 1833) and Mary THOMPSON (1777 - 1872). Joseph and Mary appear to have had 8 children. Mary (1805), Harriet (1806), Joseph (1808) and Thomas (1812) seem to have been illegitimate, since Mary was the subject of a £100 bastardy bond, and the other three were baptised with the comment "reputed father Joseph COOPER". Later children - John (1814), William (1817), James (1821) and Ann (1829) were baptised as the children of Joseph and Mary COOPER, but I have not yet found a marriage for Joseph and Mary. I have also not been able to establish why Joseph and Mary did not marry before about 1812. Was Joseph married to someone else? Or were they related in some way which prohibited their marriage? Mary Thompson's mother was Ann Cooper, so it is possible they were uncle and niece. The Thompsons, Coopers and Tavenders intermarried with various other Hawkesbury families. After the death of her husband, Elizabeth Cooper married Charles TOGHILL and had two more children. In the 1841 census, Thomas Cooper is listed as a coal haulier. Does anyone know what this means? Did he take coal to Hawkesbury, or was he involved in the transport of coal from local mines to other places. Where were the nearest coal mines to Hawkesbury, It must have been a hard pull up the road from Hawkesbury church to Hawkesbury Upton. Any help with information on these families would be much appreciated. Bob Lawrence. *************************************************** R.P. & A.L. 3. Last year some of my rellies visited from Aus and left me a pamphlet from the Cape Banks Family History Society which as far as I can gather is based in Maroubra, New South Wales. Unfortunately I cannot access their web page and their emaill addresses bounce. The following was printed in their September 1998 pamphlet although the copyright is not theirs. The Bussorah Merchant arrived in Port Jackson on the 4th September 1839. Some of my PEARCE rellies were on board as were Linda B's VAISEYs, some SHIPWAY's who were probably related to the Hawkesbury ones and of course some THOMPSONs. Divine service was performed 14 times (i.e. every Sunday) when the weather permitted; and on each occasion a sermon was read. All the emigrants were Protestant. Two schools were established: one for each sex, and about 54 children attended very regularly. To prevent idleness and consequent disease, the males were obliged to clean the decks and invited to assist the crew in working the ship, which they did very willingly. The females, also, were obliged to clean their own bed place, and were encouraged in their attempts to improve their sewing, by repairing their clothes, making and repairing bed curtains and other light works. They were likewise allowed, and urged to walk much , at a quick pace, on the quarter deck, and around the capstan, which is good exercise at sea, because the motion of the vessel compels the persons so engaged to use considerably more muscular exertion than would be required in going a greater distance on shore, or in a ship at anchor. The best of all amusements and exercises on shipboard, could not be procured for the emigrants - I mean dancing - because no individual among the crew or passengers could play the violin or any other musical instrument; to make up in some degree for this deprivation, such as the males and females , at the much inferior to that of Catalance ? were permitted and encouraged to give evening concerts of vocal music and thus an innocent amusement was afforded both to the performers and to others who could not join them. The lower deck was kept constantly dry (never being washed), and was almost daily rubbed with sand, after careful scraping, and occasional sprinkling with a strong solution of chloride of lime; no persons except those actively engaged in the work being allowed to remain below, during the process of cleaning the deck and berths. The bottom boards of the berths were carefully lifted, almost every day, in order both to promote a free circulation of air, and that no filth of any description might be suffered to remain on the deck below them. It may be added that such of the males as were mechanics, were allowed to work at their respective trades, and that to such occupations in a great degree, and still more so to the cordial co-operation o Captain Moncrief and his officers, in all that was attempted and recommended, may be ascribed the almost unexampled good health of the emigrants during a voyage of unusual length. James Scott M C Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians of London, Surgeon Superintendent.

    3. Hi Brian Thank you for this - I was worried I was going to have to go back to the drawing board. You say you have many COOKs. My COOK interests are extremely vague and unproved. I have a family bible dedicated to my G-G-Grandmother, Charlotte HOPKINS, of Hawkesbury. The inscription reads: [Charlotte HOPKINS In remembrance of the late Mr. John COOK who died Aug. 3rd 1848. And by it "the ?long? dead ?yet? speaketh" Hebr XI 4.] I am reading from a copy of a copy of a scanned copy, so it is possible the quote is not correct. I deduce that John COOK was possibly (or likely) Charlotte's Grandfather. I have not yet got her mother's maiden name and so it is possible it was COOK. Her mother was Caroline and she married James HOPKINS. I have found them in Newent on 1851 Census and it shows her birthplace as Linton, GLS. Have you anything that might prove any of this? He appears to have been the registrar for the Chipping Sodbury district which included the Hawkesbury area in the late 1830's and for part of the 1840's hence his signature on numerous birth and death certificates. Hope this helps whoever it was who wanted to know. Janet

    3. Hello, everyone. I've been in contact with Geoffro before, but this is my first posting to the list to let you know where exactly my interests lie. James BUTLER of Horton married Elizabeth THOMPSON of Hawkesbury in 1773. I think Elizabeth was the daughter of James & Mary, baptised at Hawkesbury in 1743, and this is as far as I've got with the THOMPSONs. However, I do have quite a bit on the BUTLERs and REEDs of Horton, and on the GALEs of Tormarton, all of whom presumably married into Hawkesbury families, so please get in touch if you'd like me to see if I have anything that might help.
