    3. Thanks for the list of CHAPPELL children. My information on the Chappel/Tavender marriage comes from the parish register, and the rest from the 1851 and 1881 census. Have you found any of the pre 1851 children in the 1851 census? I found a Sarah aged 6 in Gordon Beavington's Grandmaster index, but not in the as enumerated. What is the source of your information? 1. [[Hawks]] Another mystery: Mary Ann FREKE
    2. Marilyn Moffat
    3. In 1847, a child EMILY JANE HULBERT was born to Grace HULBERT. The parish record shows this child baptised, and present were Grace herself, Grace's father George and a Mary Ann FREKE. I have no idea who this lady is but in 1851 there is one - (and only one family group), listed in the census transcripts - a wife - Mary Ann FREKE aged 19 in Bitton. On the other hand the IGI indexes have a variety of FREKES in Bristol St George and Kingswood. I'd love to know who this person is and what relationship she had to the family to be listed as a witness at the baptism - was she a friend of Grace? If so she was a lot younger than her - she was also quite young to be married in Oct 1847 - although I know it happened a lot. Perhaps she was a relative of the (unknown) father? If anyone out there has this lady in their family trees, I'd love to know a bit about her, as it might give me some valuable leads to follow up on. Thanks, Marilyn

It seem likely that Edward was baptised 1743 in Alderley, son another Edward and Hester. Haven't found anyone in the family called Moses. 2. R.P. & A.L. Lawrence
    3. Although I live in the area, I have not done any research on Bitton, etc in the 19th century, so am not quite sure how far Bitton extended at that time. I have tried to check the current population, but the latest figure is probably in the 1991 census, and therefore out of date. The boundaries of these parishes in the mining/industrial/residential area to the east of Bristol sometime bear little relationship to the actual pattern of settlement. However, Bitton is now largely a residential area, dormitory to Bristol, and has grown a lot in the past 20 years. The population now must be in the thousands or tens of thousands. Bob Lawrence N.B. Bitton is very near Warmley, where the Bristol & Avon Family History Society are holding their open day on Saturday 20th May. It is at the Warmley War Memorial & Community Centre, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and admission is free. All the usual atttractions.

    3. Isaac Chappel married Ann Tavender at Hawkesbury on 11 October 1849. They had children George (Sep 1850) and John (c 1857). Isaac and Ann are listed in the 1851 and 1881 censuses, with Isaac shown as a farm labourer. Ann Tavender was baptised at Hawkesbury on 29 Sep 1822, the daughter of John Tavender and Hester nee Cotes. She was the younger sister of my gt-gt-grandmother Elizabeth Tavender. 3. Re the Tarviners/Tavinders and all the spellings - Yes - I have fond most of the spelling alternatives too. If you have any Taviners in the Wilts area, especially at the turn of the 18th to 19th C, we might be able to start looking for links - James HULBERT married Mary Taviner and his son moved to Hawkesbury where he married (Ann COOK) and settled. James sister Sarah also married Mary's brother Richard Taviner. This would be the second link as I'm the Marilyn that Geoffro refered to when he picked up on your Thompson link - I was a bit slow as Thompson is a confusing area of study as they were so populous - Geoff is definitely way ahead of me! 3. My dad reminded me yesterday that I have another mystery to solve - this time it concerns an old lady he met in the 60's when he started investigating the family links in Hawkesbury. I've rechecked recent traffic and don't see anything although as I remember there were THOMPSON/BUTLER marriages mentioned but for late 18th C. dates. This lady lived in the area around Back Street (I think - it was a long time ago now). She was a THOMPSON but her married name was LILY (Lillian?) BUTLER and she told my Dad about his own father and how she used to go to visit the HULBERT family at Scrubbits Farm, Newington Bagpath. This would have been between 1890 and 1920 when they moved on, making this lady 60 to 70+ when Dad spoke to her My dad believes her daughter worked on a farm too- for Tom Redman at Ozleworth (in case that rings a bell with someone !! :-)) It would be really nice if we can place this lady into the Thompson/ Hulbert clan.
