    3. Hello Linda, Yes we did speak before very breifly, this is where I am at the moment, below is an extract of a mail I sent to someone else re my 2 last generations it follows:- My GGGGGrandfather was William Ballard born abt 1772 (1841 Census) he was a Cordwainer (Cordoven, Leather Hides, Textile? etc trade) and was extensivley recorded as a Boot and Shoe Maker, he lived in Lamb Lane, Bristol, and worked from his shop at 36 Old Market Street ( now redeveloped, with a stone plaque "Hide Market") he married Hester Hyatt, ( Hyatts from Glou City 1600's) from Backwell 1795 at St. Micheals they had several children, who married Sarah Owen from Chipping Sodbury, John Lyddon Pawn Broker from Old Market, James Spilling from London, Tailor, and Sussana Alexander, who I have previously mentioned, he also married Mary Lusty 1825 form/born 1789 Kings Stanley (1851 Census), William died 1848 and so i can not find is birth place from 1851 census, in 1841 Census it say's "Another County". My GGGGGGrandfather was William Ballard he was a Scribbler (Carding used in textile manufacturer). I have no birth or death place for him, and I dont know who his first wife was , my paternal GGGGGGrandmother, he died before 1812 has his second wife Elizabeth Smith remarried John Millard from her death cert it says the wid of William Ballard Soldier. I have found a marriage at King Stanley for William Ballard and Ann Lusty 1771 by Lic. Ann Lusty was born 1751 the daughter of Issac Lusty and Mary Heaven but if this one is mine, I have yet to find out, but I do suspect it could well be?. >From What I have found so far, King Stanley and the textile trade went hand in glove during this period, William Ballard's Trade could well have taken him there, what about his Soldiering? how might this connect with this area, his son continued in what could be described as a Textile related trade and had connections to King Stanley himself he married Mary Lusty, a niece or great niece of Ann Lusty perhaps? some one he had already known thr ough family connection in this area?. and would Ballard's I have found in the Stroud areas at about this period possibly connect to King Stanley or earlier Bristol Ballard's. This is where I am at!, Have you searched, further, the Wickwar and Kingswood parish records what parishes/church did you find these in, I need to check my files, but I am sure I have a George Ballard in Kingswood or Wickwar, I have just commisioned the extraction of all the Ballard Glou. Wills and a few other bits, this may help, Have you found any other as yet unconnected Ballard material, Best Wishes *Adrian John Ballard Ballard1@Cableinet.co.uk * ***********BALLARD GENEALOGY*********** ****** A COLLECTION OF BALLARD's ***** http://members.tripod.co.uk/AdrianBallard/index.html ----- Original Message ----- From: Linda Barraclough <kapana@netspace.net.au> To: <ENG-GLO-HAWKESBURY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, May 25, 2000 9:24 PM Subject: [[Hawks]] BALLARDS > Hi Adrian and List, > > >I am new to this List and wonder if anybody can help me, I am researching my > >surname Ballard, > > > > I have James BALLARD of Wickwar, who married Hannah SARGEANT 17 May 1807 at > Kingswood. Hi Mavis Do you know of Hester GUNTER b.abt 1725 from Hawkesbury she marries John CURNOCK of Slimbridge 21 may 1745 and dies shortly afterwards(they don't normaly have that affect on women) he then marries Hester MALLET who I think may have been her cousin. 2. R.P. & A.L. Lawrence
    3. Robert Here is what I have on the TAVENDERS. It doesn't include the information you sent yesterday, which I am still trying to digest. I have also not included births after 1900, when my line had all left Hawkesbury. My grandmother was Ethel May KEMP, daughter of Rosina COOPER and Daniel KEMP. She died in childbirth in 1919. Rosina, together with her sisters Annie and Eleanor, left Hawkesbury in the 1870s and moved to London, where they worked in domestic service until they married. However the good news is that I am in the process of buildign the Hawkesbury pages and would be pleased for all to link to it and hope that I will be able to link to other listers pages as well as including research links and email addresses. As soon as there is more news I will let you know. In the meantime A link to the list would be appreciated. And Geoffro The Pond Dipper ---

Can someone, perchance, assist? Or suggest any other local ones that could be useful to link to???? And just to help things along if your brain isn't completely fried and useless by now On August the 20th 1838 the 1/2 first cousin to Isaac married the niece of Isaac THOMPSON all of Hawkesbury and In a 140 year period from 1750 there was a William THOMPSON born at least once every 10 years at Hawkesbury all in the same family, 6 or so alive at any one time. And if anybody even mentions Mary or Elizabeth or Ann for at least a week then in the pond you go !!!!!!!!!! Geoffro The Pond Dipper --

    3. The facts as we know them :- 1 Isaac THOMPSON (1790) was done at St Mary's in December 1790 as a child of Samuel and Jane. 2 Isaac THOMPSON (1795) was done at the Baptist in Hawkesbury in Hawkesbury in 1795 as a child of William and Ann. 3 In February 1814 Isaac of Hawkesbury married Jane PHELPS at Sopworth, Wilts. Witnesses to the marriage but not known by us at the time were Samuel THOMPSON and Kitty THOMPSON. 4 In 1815 22 year old Isaac THOMPSON of Hillesley was jailed for stealing a leg of mutton. He was a shoemaker. 5 We found neither Isaac on the 1841 census 6 Isaac THOMPSON father of Rodelinda Rowena SHIPWAY (nee THOMPSON) claims to be 57 in the 1851 Hillesley census. Perhaps of more relevance is his occupation of Mason. 7 In 1859 Isaac arrives in Aus and claims to be 65. Also says he is from Bath. 8 Isaac (1790) had a brother Samuel and a sister Kitty. 9 The family of Isaac (1790) were Masons. Samuel built his own house in Hawkesbury before 1823. Isaac got a 1/6th share of this in 1834 when Samuel died. 10 The family of Isaac (1795) were Cordwainers. 11 The family of Isaac (1795) had baptists amongst them - David THOMPSON born 1792 was baptised. Was the Half uncle to Isaac (1790). 12 Isaac (1795) had 2 children and himself christened on Christmas day 1826 at Hawkesbury. Also christened that day there were 5 (five) of his 1/2 first cousins, children of Uncle David. making 8 THOMPSON christenings in one day. 13 There are 2 clear THOMPSON families in Hawkesbury at this stage (they may be related further back but that doesn't help here). 14 The cordwaining side of the family is the same side of the family with the baptists. Those then are the facts as we know them now. It should be remembered that the wedding witnesses and the Isaac's emigration were not known at the time of the original discussion and decision. Isaac's emigration in 1859 ties in with the age he gives in 1851. This may not be correct and he may have had reasons for lying. I believe we have to discount how old Isaac SAYS he is and work on what else we know from the facts above. I having regard to all the above am now prepared to say that I believe that Isaac(1790) was the father of Rodelinda Rowena - and all the other "funny name" THOMPSON's. My reasons are thus :- 1 The 1826 christenings, the baptist links and the cordwaining occupation all point to Isaac (1795) son of William and Ann 2 The occupation of Mason all point to the family of Samuel and Jane but the clincher is and it is Adrain Sheppard who deserves the credit for supplying the information through this list is 3 The marriage witnesses at the Wedding of Isaac THOMPSON to Jane PHELPS are clearly Isaac (1790) sister and either brother or father. Therefore Isaac either did not know his age or lied for whatever reason. Those are my thoughts and conclusions. What do other listers think. All contibutions to this discussion are actively sought and welcomed. Please try and prove me wrong if only so I don't have to tell cousin Doug that he was right all along ever since last November when we agreed to disagree and I chose the wrong one. I suppose the moral of the above is always make notes of why you like or not a piece of information and always check and recheck the information to see if it all stands up after months. OK Doug so you were right I give in. Geoffro The Pond Dipper

As I see it Isaac b.1795 Oldbury On Hill senior moves to Hawkesbury he has a son Isaac with his wife Jane and four other children, There is also another Isaac born at Hawkesbury circa 1779 and a child born to Mary CHAPPEL and father George WIMBOW also named Isaac CHAPPEL, Based on the fact I know the Isaac senior was b.1795 he must have married about 1818 his son Isaac was born 1820 I know this to be his son because in census they live next door to each other at 7 & 8 the Row and senior has grandson Henry CHAPPELL in house at time of census, and birth dates tally. Isaac junior is listed as having parents Isaac & Jane hence I know of Jane in 1849 Isaac junior marries Ann TAVINDER at Hawkesbury, but just to confuse matters Isaac senior marries Elizabeth Gingell. In 184! 1 cencus Jane has either run off with a fancy man or died as she is not living with Isaac senior. in later cencus Isaac and son are at Tresham in different houses Isaac senior is namning his wife Bessey (Elizabeth).later Isaac junior's son William is living in Park St Hawkesbury married to Annie Elizabeth WHITE. Nice to see Hawkesbury on PC again Robert. ============================== Join the RootsWeb WorldConnect Project: Linking the world, one GEDCOM at a time. http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/
