Is the mother Lucy the one who died Melbourne 1851 aged 59? I would be grateful if you could give me the dates and ships of arrival for all these if you have them. Did Joseph die ENG? Bill THOMPSON wrote :- There was no piped water in the houses at Hillesley, the water came from Kilcott and there were a few taps in the village. The water came from a spring at the back of Mr. WATTS farm and was piped down to Neathwood Mill by gravity {The mill at the top was run by CURTIS and Neathwood by his son who used to cuss at him until he let the water go}. There was an underground ram there, you could hear it thumping away night and day, pumping the water onto Hillesley. Hope this helps Geoffro The Pond Dipper

    3. Hi Anne There is in effect water reservoirs all over due to the nature of the rock structure, there is that great lump of concrete at Hewitts Piece I think it must still be there that was intended as a Header tank I think, it might pump water from under ground, but I have a feeling water was extracted from Killcott. also 25 years ago there was a lot of works going on in the hill side at Sodbury It may have been something to do with water but there cannot be much need for a large man made reservoir when you can dig a well anywhere at Hawkesbury and the water table is fairly constant. 3. Hi Sue > Is Hillsley a village within the parish of Hawkesbury? Hillesley became a parish after the 1851 census. The church was built in 1851. Hillesley is a village in its own right. Many who were born and brought up in Hillesley said they were from Hawkesbury and indeed they were as the village was part of the parish of Hawkesbury. Geoffro

If anyone else has STINCHCOMBE interests Dave HEDGES ,Harry COX, and myself found quite a few unfortunatly Daves pic's havent turned out so good but he's planning to go back with lighting to get best effects. 2. Linda Barraclough
    3. Hi Gang, I am also responding to Geoffro's request to reintroduce ourselves. And, from the outset, I would point out that I can spell, I just can't tipe. :) My name is Linda Barraclough, and I live in what you would call a small village (one main crossroad, pub on one corner, store on the other, closed down smithy on another) in country Victoria, Australia. I pretend to be a historian/publisher, while spending too much time doing other things. My main lines go back to Kingswood via Wotton-Under-Edge, with a little branchlet in Hawkesbury (SARGEANT/GOWEN) around 1800. Other lines around there (and Wickwar / Cam) are VAISEY, MILSOM, HABLE, WICKS, BALLARD, HALE and MILLARD. By the way - we have always talked about the "VAISEY nose", which is long, fine and pointed. Just seen a photo of Hannah VAISEY nee BALLARD. It is obviously the BALLARD nose. Adrian - do you have a similar occurence???? Anyway, in 1839, the WICKS and VAISEY families, and some of Geoffro's THOMPSONS (cannot remember if there is a P in there), boarded the "Bussorah Merchant" and went to New South Wales. They were supposed to be joining another branch of the family, as yet unfound. (Ignore previous references to HAMS and Mary Ann Sargeant - wrong family!). And the MILSON/MILSOM name (or similar) turns up there as well. One day it will all fall into place Cheers Linda

    3. Hi Fellow Listers In response to the Pond Dippers request, I was Born and bred in Hawkesbury Upton in 1953 I attended the village primary school before going on to Katherine Lady Berkleys Grammar School down the road at Wotton-Under-Edge I realy could see the monument from my bedroom window and the view across the valley to Tresham I left Hawkesbury in my twenties and moved to Yate some 5 miles away I still have lots of family at Hawkesbury at the age of 10 my family bought a house in Back Street which was ineffect the private chapel and vestery to the Big house in the book "a monument to Hawkesbury" It had belonged to my uncle Maurice RANGER and his father before him they were the village carpenters and undertakers the chapel was the St Johns Street Methodist at one time but it was built at the same time as the big house in 1630 long before John Wesley and it is possible it was first used by Quakers we found a connecting tunnel to the big house next door why it was used is a mystery but this type of tunnel was not uncommon in the village, we were the first children to play on the back lawns we soon noticed regular areas begining to sag this is when we discovered there had been burials there and the land had be deconsacrated many years before the chapel had the upper half removed around 1959 and had been a carpenters workshop for many years my father was an apprentice there before national service. The chapel was converted to a house making it one with the vestry the entrance pillars are still there today along with its "sitting tennants" who the new owners say are still there. My family is interwoven with other families of the village my CHAPPELL side came from Oldbury-On-Hill originaly. The MILLARD side comes from Berkley the CORNOCK line is from Slymbridge, the STINCOMB side is connected to ILES other family are WATTS, PERKS, HARBER,BERRY, TOWNSEND, RANGER RODWAY TAVENDER, WHITE, GINGELL, HUTTON , COTES , HANDCOCK, PANTER my gran was Ella one of the CORNOCK triplets my great aunt was the PERKS who had 24 chilren twice and sadly lost 4 sons in the first war which is somthing I learnt from the Hawkesbury list. Many thanks to Geoff the Pond Dipper for making it possible to contact such a helpfull group of people with like interests. By the way the farm pool was used for dipping in quite recent times when at a football match the referee got on the wrong side of the crowd and in he went. 3. Due to problems Adrian is having with Rootsweb which arre probably not his fault I am posting this for him. Until recently I did not know if I had Glou connections, I was Born and Bred in Bristol and have lived in most parts of the City at one time or another, I was born 1964 I am an Electrical Contractor,. married with four children, Charlotte, William, John, and James, who was born Saturday just gone 20th May 2000, (another clone :)). My Father John Frderick Ballard was born in Bristol 1926, he served in WW2 in the Middle East he was a Royal Engineer, and still lives in Bristol and is a Property Speculator. My Grandfather Edwin Thomas Ballard (aka Thomas or Ted)was born 1880, Kingswood Road, Oldland, Bitton, his trade was a French Polisher, Jouneyman, but he worked has a Chimneysweep and Builder, he lived, Staple Hill Road, Mayors Buildings, Mauldlin Street, Tudor Road, I was told his eldest Brother William went to Canada?, he married Beatrice Mary Taylor 1902, and Doris Victoria Dring 1923 in London, both wifes were related, Beatrice commited suicied by drowning in Duchess Pond, and he was dis- inherited for remarrying into the same family, he died 1949 and was buried at St Marys? Downend Road, were he was exumed from his fathers tomd after a lawsuit by Unknown? re:-claim to the Plot? and was reburied in a different plot. My GGrandfather was William Henry Ballard, he was born 1859 at Brick Street, St. Phillip & Jacob and was named the same as his elder Brother who died 18 months and was born 1855 ( I have found a William Ballard born 1855 from Bristol in Berkshire 1881 Census, although no other was recorded in BMD's???). He was a Chimney Sweep and Lived 1 Rabbit Burrous, Pleasent Road, Long Lane, he married Elizabeth Farrant 1875 he died 1898 of TB aged 41and was buried St. Mary, Downend Road. My GGGrandfather was Edwin Ballard, he was born 1833 at St. Phillip & Jacob he married Mary Ablett (the widow of Wright Cummings from Clifton ChimneySweeps). he became a Chimney Sweep and later a Licensed Vitular, he lived in Long Lane, Forest Road, Staple Hill Road, his daughters Caroline married Bert Sheppard and his other Fanny married George Crane, untill recently Bert was still using a property that Edwin had left to his daughter for Hairdressing, it used to be the old Off licence at the end of Forest Road, near Staple Hill Road, he died 1918. My GGGGrandfather was William Henry Ballard born 1805 at St. Phillip & Jacob he was a General Dealer he married Sussana Alexander of Bath at St Micheals Bristol, not to much is documented for this one his wife is recorded in 1881census living at Canterbury Street, in a property that his nephew Joseph Ballard, later leaves in a will with some 80 others in the Barton Hill area, she is later recorded at Wrington Cottage 1991Census, William died 1873. My GGGGGrandfather was William Ballard born abt 1772 (1841 Census) he was a Cordwainer (Cordoven, Leather Hides, Textile? etc trade) and was extensivley recorded as a Boot and Shoe Maker, he lived in Lamb Lane and worked from his shop at 36 Old Market Street ( now redeveloped, with a stone plaque "Hide Market") he married Hester Hyatt, ( Hyatts from Glou City 1600's) from Backwell 1795 at St. Micheals they had several children, who married Sarah Owen from Chipping Sodbury, John Lyddon Pawn Broker from Old Market, James Spilling from London, Tailor, and Sussana Alexander, who I have previously mentioned, he also married Mary Lusty 1825 form/born 1789 Kings Stanley (1851 Census), William died 1848 and so I can not find is birth place from 1851 census, in 1841 Census it say's "Another County". My GGGGGGrandfather was William Ballard he was a Scribbler (Carding used in textile manufacturer). I have no birth or death place for him, and I dont know who his first wife was , my paternal GGGGGGrandmother, he died before 1812 has his second wife Elizabeth Smith remarried John Millard from her death cert it says the wid of William Ballard Soldier. I have found a marriage at King Stanley for William Ballard and Ann Lusty 1771 by Lic. Ann Lusty was born 1751 the daughter of Issac Lusty and Mary Heaven but if this one is mine, I have yet to find out, but I do suspect it could well be?. >From What I have found so far, King Stanley and the textile trade went hand in glove during this period, William Ballard's Trade could well have taken him there, what about his Soldiering? how might this connect with this area, his son continued in what could be described as a Textile related trade and had connections to King Stanley himself he married Mary Lusty, a niece or great niece of Ann Lusty perhaps? some one he had already known through family connection in this area?. and would Ballard's I have found in the Stroud and sorrounding areas at about this period possibly connect to King Stanley or earlier Bristol Ballard's. I found a Vicar of Hawksbury WILLIAM BALLARD died 1711 so I am lurking around in hope! PS, today I received the marraige licence for WILLIAM BALLARD & ANNE LUSTY 1771 @ Kingstanley it describes WILLIAM BALLARD as a Wool Scribler, (so I think this one fits?) Yippeeeeee! on the back of the Licence, handwritten was, " J. B. 12th May 1770 " could this be the details of his father and a death date, would this kind of information be requested from a Licence applicant? can anybody help has anybody come across a burial for ANN BALLARD (nee LUSTY) formally of Kings Stanley, bef 1784 when WILLIAM BALLARD re- married Anyway this is my claim to Gloucestershire fame,??
