    3. Hi Janice There are still HATHERALL's farming at Petty France (behind Petty France hotel)Hawkesbury, There was a large family at Oldbury on Hill who farmed Lower Oldbury farm approx 450 acres this family are derived from Marshfield where they had lots of land. Abraham HATHERALL was village grocer and draper at Oldbury on Hill in 1851 the family having been there for sometime and inter married with local families such as CHAPPELL's where they often kept Hatherall as part of name of children. Edwards children are presumably the HATHERALL's that appear at Nailsworth Cheltenham and Avening in 1851 who have sons named Edward in two of there three families I note there is also HOLBROW's living at Avening who retired from farming at Sherston which is near Oldbury? 3. In 1851 there were over 60 residents of Hawkesbury and Hillesley with the surname HOPKINS aged from under 1 year to 70 years. The HOPKINS name continued in the village well into this century and indeed Harley HOPKINS was renowned for his Lardy cake. I've never had that but I did enjoy the Lavender cake in the village last weekend. Aaron HOPKINS married Hannah RICHARDS. There are a number of links between HOPKINS and THOMPSON some direct some less indirect. Maria CHAPPELL who married Samuel THOMPSON in 1816 was the grand daughter of Jane HOPKINS. Samuel is the 3rd great grand uncle of Mrs Pond Dipper. The Jesse LEWIS to Eunice HOPKINS marriage has links to the THOMPSONs as do many others. William HOLBOROW is known to many listers as a witness at many Hawkesbury weddings. And indeed the family farms almost 1,000 Acres in 1851 whilst another family member was a Schoolmaster. The HATHERELL family also trace back into the 1700's although there are only 2 by the time of the 1851 census. I guess we will have to sit back and wait patiently until Nigel reveals more and to which of us he is related. Listers should not forget to post messages to the GLS list as with almost 1,000 listers your chances of a successful match are increased. Don't forget to access the GLS surnames list through GENUKI either as somebody may be sitting at home waiting fro that call from you. It was the GLS list and a question I posted about the Hawkesbury monument that led eventually to the formation of this list. Thanks cousin Marilyn, And lastly Welcome Janice to our happy band. 3. My Grandfather moved from Hawkesbury to KINGSCOTE - a bit nearer to Tetbury... there one of the more wealthy farming families were the HOLBOROWs and there are people with the same name in Hawkesbury - I've seen people discussing this. The Kingscote Holborows moved to Cheltenham and found Cheltenham Dairies - the link continues as my grandad moved to Cheltenham too - and remembered them and spoke of them to my Dad. My grandfather farmed at Scrubbitts farm Newington Bagpath (a tiny place associated with Kingscote - mainly because that was where they went for "small" things like the church and access to the main road. His nearest neighbour and friend was a HATHERALL - can't remember the name of the farm just now - when my dad and I visited Kingscote church we noticed 2 or 3 Hatheralls on the Roll of Honour from WW1 - all killed in action. - you could therefore also try the Commonwealth War Graves, if these may be related to yours. 3. Marilyn Thanks for the TAVENDER (etc) information. My 1881 census is on order. I have used borrowed sets many times - it is about time I got one of my own. While stumbling round my files, I found an Excel file of Gloucestershire TAVENDERS. I will contact the guy who sent it to me, to check if he is happy for me to distribute it more widely. He is descended from a John TAVENDER who left Alderley in the 1850s to work in the South Wales coalfields. Bob

    3. Thanks Bob for the information that George TAVENDER/TAVENER was born at Hullavington. Intriguing, because my Janetta PARSONS who married Francis FRANKCOM was also born at Hullavington. They married at Hawkesbury in 1842. Janetta had an illegitimate child called Owen Hopkins PARSONS when she was only 15. He was baptised at Hullavington in 1839 and was only two and a half when his mother married. Has anyone heard of him? No sign of him at Hullavington and I have never found him in any census. And talking of HOPKINS, I have a Lucas HOPKINS marrying a Hesther FRANKCOM at Hawkesbury inf 1858. Regards Pat Adair
