You should get a lot of replies! I have Ann Rodway b abt 1749 who married John Cook. She died 1835 Then there's Deborah Rodway who married Nathaniel Stinchcomb. Their dau Mary m. Weeks Pincott and they had Matthew, Joyce & Jane. Weeks Pincott was son of Mat Pincott and gson of Mary Gulwell (one of mine) and Matthew Pincott. Let me know if any of these tie in. I do also have one or two later Stinchcombs in my file. Having read the e-mail from Marilyn I thought some of you would like to contact Rod - his address is rod.neep@fweb.org.uk He is a regular contributer to the NOTTSGEN list as he is researching his family in that County as I am. Rod specialises in putting old documents onto CD and making them available for everyone. A lot of the work he does is with the help of volunteers such as Marilyn. He isn't too far away either in case anyone wants to visit him - Forest of Dean. Best wishes, Anne
I seem to recall recently that someone was asking if the Gloucestershire Monumental Inscriptions have been collected and copied. Well in the Victorian State Library I found the Bigland Gloucestershire Collection. More properly " The Ralph Bigland Historical, Monumental and Genealogical Collection Relative to the County of Gloucestershire." This is edited by Brian Frith and brought out by The Bristol and Gloucestershire Archeological Society. ISBN 0 900197 30 7 Ralph Bigland died in 1784 so everything here is pre that date. It is in 4 volumes and Indexed!! The parishes are arranged in alphabetical order so it is easy to use. Secondly since I have already found one marriage of a Hawkesbury couple in Sopworth I decided to try another Wiltshire Parish. Sherston Major looked close so I decided to try the Parish Records film at my local LDS centre. The film is No 1279304 and although there are some of the inevitable chicken scrawls the majority of the records are beautifully written and easy to read - especially the early records. I can't say I found "my" particular people but there were many of the surnames that I normally see in Hawkesbury and some of characters were from Oldbury and nearbye spots. There were definitely Chappells, Tompsons, Shipways and Wicks/Weeks among others. For any Hawkesbury searchers this is well worth a look, if only for the copperplate handwriting. However you will be pleased to know that he is a THOMPSON cousin (sic) although he is more closely related to Bob LAWRENCE. The family is COOPER. Thanks to Pat Adaair who sent me a copy of the message in case I missed it Cousin Marilyn will be posting your pressie tomorrow Geoffro The Pond Dipper

Hello Geoff Saw the additions to your site after your busy weekend. I previously read the HLHS notes on Hawkesbury and found them very interesting, wish they'd put more online. Now you've posted your pictures and finally cut the grass, when are you and Barrie getting your act together as you put it ? - How about posting some information about the church (better still the residents outside its walls - I presume there is a graveyard connected) also some informative notes on historic buildings; and a description of the area including hamlets for those of us who aren't residents; the lifestyle of poorer regular folk (not the moneyed class who are already well documented) of days past; local cures and medicine in those days; sheep or agricultural farming or the hand-loom weaver or any other cottage industry in the area; any quarries? local markets and fair days in days of yore; information on dissenters; do you have any information on coach names, their stops and routes to major cities and towns, prices and distances? Tid-bits on History are always interesting. I think we're all hungry for information. My gr.gr.granddfather's coffin was slung between two horses and trecked down a hillside path unsuitable for wheels and up another to his final resting place beside his wife. Many cottagers had their little orchard and brewed their own cider. They carried buckets of water from the village well if not fortunate enough of having one nearer. Any olde worlde pictures and information? It was an equestrian age and every village had a blacksmith or two. A community shared its festivities as well as its grief or strife, and their industries were bound and dependant on each other - the clothier, weaver, tailor, cobbler, carpenter, clockmaker, miller, reddleman, wheelwright, farrier, mantua maker, tranter, maltster, and of course the publican, as well as the dairy with all its creamy riches and cheeses, just to mention a few. Who were these people, and how did they express their joy, their need or their sorrow. How many local young men left home bound for a man-o'-war destined for the Napoleonic wars and how many returned to be buried some later date in the local churchyard (if any). We also read that people didn't move around too much and often families intermarried, but I'm finding it not quite so with my tree, I'm getting quite exhausted and worn out at chasing after them and at playing hide and seek ! There now, that should keep you pondering and out of mischief for a little while. Your site could draw many new viewers and listers and keep bringing them back for another peek. Particularly if you get Robert to *dig* up info. for you and write your stories !! I'm sure your wish will be granted of reaching 1,000, and who knows maybe before the grass needs to be cut again :-) On second thoughts with a wish like yours perhaps with so many you should forget the grass and consider putting down stone ?? <g> The site is taking shape, keep it up and keep smiling, All the best, Janice Toronto, Canada -----Original Message----- From: Geoff Brightman <geoff_brightman6@thefreeinternet.co.uk> To: ENG-GLO-HAWKESBURY-L@rootsweb.com <ENG-GLO-HAWKESBURY-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Sunday, June 25, 2000 3:47 PM Subject: [[Hawks]] Another busy weekend >We now have 30 subscribers in list mode and 13 subscribers in digest mode. >It is the GLS list that has 1,000 subscribers. Doug, Les has been in touch, thank you very much. We were about to swap notes on our Swedish and French connections - Hilda STRANDQUIST and Jean Francois PIRESSE (aka Frank PERES) when the gremlins took over. If you'd like, I can send my mum's - Lorna May - siblings and their families information to you. Lila is not actually into genealogy, more a collection of family stories, (for want of a better description) Helga, Takura.

I have only found out about this line recently. Wilmott's son Arthur Edmund SHIPWAY had a son John Joseph SHIPWAY who had Raymond William SHIPWAY who had a daughter Lesley. She married a CAMPBELL. (Helga is her first cousin) I'm getting the details together. I'll post more when it's sorted. I think Raymond William and Lorna May had a sister Pearl whose daughter Lila (another cousin of Helga and Lesley) is working on the genealogy too (not computerised though) Doug
Yes. It is Gwen LAMIE and Doug THOMPSON you were thinking of Helga! Leslie visited Gwen (in Florida now) just a month ago. I don't like giving out people's email addresses without their permission so I've forwarded your request to her. She'll probably get in touch soon. Doug Thompson
Perhaps an easy one to solve. I would hazard that Gwen is Gwen LAMIE. Secondly that Donald is actually Cousin Doug THOMPSON. Tis cousin Doug who has handled this side of the famiyl research and I am sure he will post the relevant addresses to you later. However, I am not sure I know of a Leslie CAMPBELL, Would love to know more. Geoffro The Pond Dipper
Hello all, I'm hoping to contact with my cousin Leslie CAMBELL through this list. (My emails to her keep returning.) She mentioned getting my email address through a Gwen in Canada, who got it from Donald THOMPSON in England. Thank you, Helga, Takura, Qld. Aust.
We now have 30 subscribers in list mode and 13 subscribers in digest mode. It is the GLS list that has 1,000 subscribers. Oh boy do I wish it was our list with that many. The new pages are now up and working. Let me know if you want a web page or email link. The pictures page I hope to do tonight. Those of you that havent reminded us of your interests for a while should consider doing so. Nigel BLEAKEN has already had success since joining us yesterday. Mrs Pond Dipper is now happy as I have finally cut the back grass. Only 4 rooms to decorate and she will be happier than ever before. !!!! Geoffro The Pond Dipper
Dear Listers, I thought as I read Geoffro's message that there were over 1000 on the list now, I would put a few of my interests for everyone to see in the hope that someone out there is interested! Mostly in GREAT BADMINTON and HAWKESBURY the family of DAVIS. The earliest I have is ROBERT DAVIS married ELIZABETH LIMBRICK 1781, then JOB DAVIS married ANN ? they then moved to GREAT BADMINTON, where they worked for the DUKE of BEAUFORT as "Helpers in Stables, Pad Gooms, Grooms and Coachmen". On the 1881 census they were still in GREAT BADMINTON, but WILLIAM, JOB'S son was an annuitant and had married for the 2nd time to MARGARET ? from WICK, BERKELEY, his 1st wife being JA(Y)NE MARY WITTS, who had obviously died. WILLIAM AND JA(Y)NE 'S son WILLIAM JOB DAVIS moved up to BURTON-ON-TRENT at some time mid 1800's. Hope someone knows these names.Regards and best wishes to you all. Mavis Williams, Flintshire.
