    2. Hi Geoffro, Thank you. This is Eliza Frances SPIRE, the first wife of Robert WOOLNOUGH. Robert was the brother of my g-g-gfather George, and Eliza was the cousin of George's wife Mary Ann HAREWELL. I don't have my notes with me at present, but have forwarded both messages to my cousin Carol, who is our family's walking genealogical encyclopedia :-) Cheers... Ken M.

    3. Dear Listers, I am on my way to England in the near future and will be focusing on my search for WICKS, GILLARD and FRY family info in Hawkesbury and Alderley (Glos.), Tormarton and Badminton (Glos.), Sopworth and Hullavington and Sherston (Wilts.), Martock and Drayton and Wellington in Somerset. The trip is kind of rushed as far as preparation time and will only be about 2 weeks long so I want to pack in as much in that time as possible. If any locals on the lists can suggest things like where to find the most info in one place (other than Kew where I will also be for a day or two) or can give me names and addresses of Protestant Cemeteries in these locations (info about oldest / largest etc.), good Bed and Breakfasts at a reasonable price or luncheon spots (especially for Somerset since the person I am staying with can advise on lunch spots in the other places) then I would be really appreciative! I AM SO EXCITED !!!!!!!!!!!! YAHOOOOOOOO !!!! and Happy Digging Everyone, Ronda WICKS (Woodstock, Ontario, Canada)

Was there any one factor that pushed you towards choosing Thomas & Bridget as the parents of Nicholas as opposed to John & Unknown? 3. Next Saturday, (15th July 2000) Mr and Mrs Pond Dipper, The Grave Robber and Benson (Dave HEDGES) will leave The Beaufort at Noon to travel the short distance to the above for the purpose of photographing and recording the Monumental Inscriptions in the grave yard. All Listers and their families are invited to join us. Robert The Grave Robber has been instructed to leave his spade at home ( we remember what he did at St John Baptist on Back Street) but we will be taking petrol and cordless strimmers and shears and the like as Robert reports the grass is some 3 feet high. The results will be available to all listers hopefully on Saturday night as we will be taking the digital cameras, dictaphones and the laptop. Who knows we may also get to join and share our first drink with Mavis WILLIAMS who from henceforth will be known as The Beaufort Belle. If you keep your eyes open you may even get to spy Anonymous Anne through the tall grass. Hillesley Street Baptist Chapel played an in important role in the parish of Hawkesbury and it is known that there are many STINCHCOMBE and CHAPPELL graves there. Who knows what other mysteries may be solved. Come and join us and help us keep an eye on the Grave Robber Geoffro The Pond Dipper

    3. Having been persuaded to subscribe to the Hawkesbury List because of the numbers of STINCHCOMBEs who originated there I must post what I know about my one and only STINCHCOMBE from Yate who married in Bristol and lived in nearby Wickwar. My great great grandmother, Lucy STINCHCOMBE, married George REDDY on 25 Jun 1831 at St.Phil. & St.Jac. Bristol; their daughter, Lucy REDDY, born in Wickwar, married Ezekiel Holman TREVETHAN and their eldest son, Sydney Charles TREVETHAN, was my mother's father. Lucy STINCHCOMBE's birthplace and date are established as Yate, 1808 from the 1851 & 1881 census. The only Stinchcomb family producing children in Yate c.1808 were: Arthur STINCHCOMB m Charlotte BAKER (b. Yate 1792), 22 Feb 1806, Yate Their children were: Harriott STINCHCOMB b. c.27 Jul 1806, Yate (Father - Arthur; Mother - Charlotte) George STINCHCOMB b. c.26 Aug 1810, Yate, (Father - Arthur; Mother - Charlotte) Unfortunately there is no sign of Lucy, who would fit neatly between these dates. I am informed that that the entering of data into the Yate Parish Register at this time was fairly haphazard, with a number of christening entries missing the surname, and sometimes one or both of the parent's names. There is no Lucy Stinchcomb christening recorded in the IGI for 1808 ( +/- 10yrs). Notes on George REDDY and Lucy STINCHCOMBE: George REDDY b. c.25 Apr 1802 at Wickwar. 25 June 1831 George REDDY m. Lucy STINCHCOMBE St.Phil. & St.Jac. Bristol George and Lucy's eldest daughter, Sarah, was born in Wickwar c.1834. George was dead by 1881 (Lucy recorded as Widow in the 1881 Census). Might Lucy have descended from a Hawkesbury STINCHCOMBE? 1. [[Hawks]] Re: [[Hawks]] THOMPSON gained (and lost!)
    2. Hi, I have been pursuing the problem of ANN CARTER and THOMAS HUNT for some years. My original research lead me to believe that I was a descendant of the JAMES CARTER and ELIZABETH THOMPSON marriage but in fact a comparatively recent discovery squashed that theory. I am descended from the CARTER/HUNT union but through their 3rd daughter MARY who had a bastard child by THOMAS SIMS of Stroud on 24.1.1807., THOMAS CARTER. MARY appears to have eventually married on 13.3.1815 a JOSEPH HALL. JOSEPH and MARY appear in the 1851 census living at Little Badminton. The death certificate of ANN CARTER dated 2?/2/1839 puts JOSEPH as present at the death and place of death as the Cherry Orchard ( which I know from the 1844 tithe map is in Little Badminton). ANN CARTER at death is recorded as being 85 making her birth around 1754 No luck however in tracing the parents. There is a baptism recorded in 1758 at Yate of an ANNE CARTER daughter of HANNAH CARTER , more research needed I think With regard to DANIEL CARTER I have never been 100% sure of who his parents were. I was advised by one of the subscribers to this list that he was the 1st son of JAMES and ELIZABETH CARTER, but could find nothing in any records to back this up. Janet

    2. Hi John HENRY, JANE, STEPHEN T.J. and EBEN STINCHOMBE are listed in the 1881 census. I found them on the 1881 census film at the FHS London living at Hawkesbury Common Gate. HENRY is recorded as a Hurdle and Rake maker together with his wife, the children are described as scholars. Janet

    3. My ancestor William NEALE (1563 - 1646) had a daughter Elizabeth who married Thomas STINCHCOMBE in 1621. Elizabeth's father left his son-in-law Thomas the sum of five shillings. A 'ewe and a lambe' were left to the couple's children. I have no more details. Could he be one of yours Adrian? The above Elizabeth NEALE had a sister Penelope NEALE who married William HANCOCK (my own line) in 1634 at Hawkesbury. William HAN/DCOCK/E is probably the eldest son of Richard b.1607 at Hawkesbury, perhaps from a first marriage as there are 14 years between him and Elizabeth who is the next child of Richard. In his will of 1674 William names his brother Maurice HANCOCKE (b. 1632 s. of Richard). I have a marriage of a Maurice HANDCOCKE to Rebecca STINCHCOMBE at Hawkesbury on the 15 April 1661. Can't help on Ann yet. I noticed Ann Carter in the register today. I imagine she was living with Thomas Hunt. (14 baseborn children!) Thomas Hunt could either be the son of Richard and Jane born 1756, or of Thomas and Mary born 1759. (James is his first son born 1777 so either could be about right in age). However, I am now going to switch over and try and progress my mother's and Welsh side of the family which is lagging far behind. I think I am the only one in the Welsh half who is showing interest in our Family History. Sincere thanks to everybody and best wishes in your research. David Northumberland

    3. Having had chance to digest John STINCHCOMBEs information which he has so kindly shared with us and having had the opportunity of speaking to him again it is becoming extremely clear that even more listers are related to each other through this particular family. Johns Grandparents were both related to Elizabeth MINETT nee THOMPSON. Elizabeth was christened at Tetbury but is in one of the family graves with her father David and various other family members. May I take this opportunity of thanking John for sharing with us the fruits of his many years of research which have been borne by the use of traditional research methods - that is without the computer. It looks as though we are now building a clearer picture of the Hawkesbury STINCHCOMBEs and their impact on the village. i am sure more links and relationships will come to light when Johns mail has sunk in.
