Welcome to this weeks new listers who bring our total up to 62. Introduce yourselves to us as soon as possible - who knows we may be related or at least know someone who is related to you. We leave the Beaufort Arms in Hawkesbury tomorrow at 12 noon to visit the graveyards at Tresham and Alderley. Time, weather and the need to spend time in the Beaufort conversing with our and your living relatives permitting we may get to go back to Little Badminton whose burials I am informed by the recently retired agent to the duke are contained within the Great Badminton registers. We shall see. Yesterday we met Odette BADMAN who is computerless thanks to Pat ADAIR remembering she had a RODWAY will. Odette lives in Glastonbury and will be joining us on September 30th at The Beaufort - listers old and new are of course invited to this. Odette is a descendant of Giles RODWAY c 1600 however due to 2 Anns being christened in 1730 and 1731 it has not been possible to determine which Ann is which. Both lived and married. Odette has kindly supplied much ALWAY information which is currently being entered on to the computer etc. Geoffro The Pond Dipper Http://www.HawkesburyFamilyHistory.co.uk

CAUDLE I am seeking information about JAMES C. CAUDLE, who appears to have been born about 1641 and possibly died about 1688. The source of what I know said he was born in New Kent, but I find no such place in England. There are some indications that he was born in Gloucestershire. Was there ever a New Kent in Gloucestershire or anywhere else in England? JAMES C. CAUDLE appears to have been the father of STEPHEN CAUDLE, believed to have been born about 1680 (possibly in Scotland). STEPHEN CAUDLE came to the Virginia colony about 1692, transported by a Captain Hawthorne. Three other Caudles, of whom I have found nothing, were also aboard. I will appreciate any help you can give. Dorman Cordell
Hi Brian, William TANDY was the grand nephew of Hester THOMPSON and the Grand uncle of Gladys Rosina THOMPSON. Gladys was the 1st cousin four times removed of Hester THOMPSON. Nothing like keeping it in the family Geoffro The Pond Dipper Http://www.HawkesburyFamilyHistory.co.uk
Brian, On the 30th of April you wrote :- > I am looking for descendants of George Morgan, born Marshfield 1857, married Hester Tandy of Hawkesbury, whose last known presence was at Park Wall, in 1891. Is Hester the one at Marshfiled born 1862 ? and daughter of William TANDY and Fanny Frances GAINEY ? who married in 1857 ? If so I have some good news for you. Geoffro The Pond Dipper Http://www.HawkesburyFamilyHistory.co.uk
Another 8th cousin added to those listers who are related this morning. Bernadette SIEBERT is the wife of Rex who is a direct descendant of James RODWAY and Mary STINCHCOMBE. Welcome to the family Bernadette. Bernadette is currently indexing the Hawkesbury 1881 strays for us. Happy hunting Geoffro The Pond Dipper Http://www.HawkesburyFamilyHistory.co.uk
Hello Beaufort Belle Are you also interested in NEALE Family from Thornbury as I have some on my CORNOCK page at www.btinternet.com/~Robert.Milllard/Curnockea did you know the GINGELL from Old Sodbury may have roots in Hawkesbury as it was Rose GINGELL married to my grandfather Ernest CHAPELL that ran off with one of those sneaky THOMPSONs whilst he was serving King and country there were lots of Gingells in Village. I know of the VIZARDS we used to go scrambling together years ago but lost touch if you wanted to contact them should find them in yellow pages under roofing contractors you can search for it in btinternet.com regards Robert. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mavis Williams" <MotherMave@jfandm.freeserve.co.uk> To: <ENG-GLO-HAWKESBURY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, July 23, 2000 6:28 PM Subject: [[Hawks]] NEALE and SHIPP > Dear Linda, > I wrote to Robert Millard and I don't know if it will have come on the > List, however, here is what I got from the 1851 Gloucestershire cenus > Iron Acton No. 55 > SHIPP William Vizard Nephew 5 Lt Sodbury/Iron Acton 51 > GINGELL James 38 Ag Lab Old Sodbury > Mary 36 Old Sodbury > > No. 69 > SMITH Thomas 45 Farmer 200ac Rangeworthy > Sarah 40 Yate > John 13 Iron Acton > Thomas 9 Scholar Iron Acton > Sarah Ann 4 Iron Acton > Mary Sipp SMITH 2 Iron Acton > > Of course I was facinated with the WILLIAM VIZARD SHIPP as I've just found > out myGGGAunt married a VIZARD, I don't know if that actually connects me to > the family or not, but I suppose there are GGGGrandparents further back who > we connect to. Thanks Linda - it was worth asking - I have noticed the strong correlation between Coppard and Kent/ Sussex, and as there is no other evidence of Coppard's in GLS at the time, I have put it down to a man from there working as a servant / worker on the big estates in the area - both the Duke of Beaufort and Lord Liverpool had houses locally, and quite a few strays passed through in this way. Thanks for the reply, Marilyn ----- Original Message ----- From: Linda.Coppard <linda.coppard@ukgateway.net> To: <ENG-GLO-HAWKESBURY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, July 23, 2000 9:32 AM Subject: [[Hawks]] Re: [[Hawks]] Looking for COPPARD > Dear Marilyn > Coppard is my married name. Dear Marilyn Coppard is my married name. My father-in-law's parents and g parents come from Sussex, Billingshurst area and, I'm sorry but I've never heard any connections with Cheltenham. This 'branch' has, however, been explored by a cousin-in-law and I will, of course, ask her whether she has come across any HULBERTs. Incidently, 2 generations back the name was COPPER but when the latest arrival was registered, the strong Sussex ooo aah accent confused the registrar who put a D at the end. As the registree couldn't read or write, he/she confirmed the spelling as correct. Amazing what you find, isn't it? Greetings all, I am back online and amongst you. It may take me a while to catch up with all your mails as I now need to start the process of reinstalling all my program files. The Grave Robber has already whetted your appetite in his last mail which would have earned him a Pond Dipping but for the intervention of Mrd Pond Dipper whom he made laugh. He is entirely correct about the church at Tresham , the views are amazing. Amongst the monuments names recognised included FRANCKOM and BOULTON as well as the odd CHAPPELL and STINCHCOMBE. We will leave the Beaufort at noon next Saturday (July 29) to photograph and catalogue the monuments at Tresham and at Alderley. Please join us. A big surprise was the size of the graveyard at Little Badminton which we know was part of the parish of Hawkesbury. I would estimate that there are in excess of 200 monuments there including many of the names list members are looking for. FRANCKOM, STINCHCOMBE, CHAPPELL, and more. Unfortunately as we had not planned to go grave visiting we had neither cameras, dictaphones or pen and paper with us. Large parts of the graveyard are overgrown and we will probably arrange a trip their soon. Mr VINER was a lovely friendly soul (despite his initial suspicious nature) who produced a plan of part of the grave yard upon which was marked a HULBERT plot. Unfortunately there was no stone on this plot. We located the resting place of George STINCHCOMBE who was chauffer to the duke of beaufort which will make Benson happy. Later in the Beaufort we were fortunate to meet Dave COATES who is a cousin to Mrs Pond Dipper and a lovely man. If you havent posted your interests for a while then you should consider doing so now and reminding people who you are looking for. Remember also to visit the hawkesbury web pages regularly as links etc are being added all the time. Have you visited Marilyn MOFFATs pages yet ? You should !! Hi Linda - and anyone else who might be able to help Your name - COPPARD - immediately jumped out at me - My family has a link to a line of Coppards, but the exact nature of the link is an aural one, because we know (knew) a Coppard family of Cheltenham, and we know the links into the HULBERT family back Mary Hulbert (b 1862), daughter of Richard Hulbert of Hawkesbury from the family in Arlingham and Cheltenham who apparently raised Mary's children after her early death. Its a complicated story, and my Dad (who knew the people involved and only later discovered the relationship) would love to find out more. If you -or anyone - can help he will be very happy! Hi Listers As the Pond Dipper is suffering from a lack of a PC and severe withdraw symtoms, and Mrs Dipper from being chased around the house? it has fallen on me to give you a report on the Hawkesbury Historical Society meeting we attended last night, or rather didn't attend , we did take our seats to listen to a lecture, one the Pond Dippers favorite subjects BEDs when we were informed that the subject was the Bristol Aircract company instead, so after a long disscusion on should we retire to the Beaufort for a pint we went to Tresham in search of a Church or Chapel ( Mrs Dippers Idea said the fresh air was good for him) so off we went. On arrival in Tresham which is a very small Hamlet we spotted a church, its almost impossable to see from the road with one of the best kept graveyards we have seen, the goods news is there are lots of very interesting burials there with all the usual Hawkesbury names the Dipper will fill you in with the details when he is back on line which according to Lady Dipper can't be soon enough!. After our surprise find at Tresham the Pond Dippper sugested we celebrate with a pint at the Beaufort so we went to find the church at Little Badminton instead, not only did we find it, it has a big graveyard for the size of the village? it was about 9 pm by this time and the sun was getting low, the sight of these three strange figures walking around the headstones prompted a local man ( Mr Viner) came out to make sure I wasn't doing any grave robbing, after we had convinced him of our true reasons for being there, and the spade was for any rare botanical species we my encounter for the Dippers collection, he went back to his cottage and returned with a plan of the burials which included some very well known family names including one that Dave( Benson) Hedges has been looking for, more I cannot say at this point, Mr Viner was very helpfull and is a key holder for the church, to which the famous five will return. At long last we did make it to the Beaufort for a long awaited pint and a bag of salted nuts, where we tried not to mention computors as this would only only induce fits of deppresion, the sight of a grown man crying in his beer is not a pretty one. with a bit of luck the Dipper will be back on line today, watch this space. regards Thr Grave Robber.
I've never come across any VIZARD's connected with the SHIPP's so far and Barbara's not mentioned any either but if we keep looking, you never know. Did you happen to notice his age and any other people living with him? ----- Original Message ----- From: Mavis Williams <MotherMave@jfandm.freeserve.co.uk> To: <ENG-GLO-HAWKESBURY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, July 18, 2000 8:24 PM Subject: [[Hawks]] Re: [[Hawks]] NEALE and SHIPP > Dear Geoffro, > I was searching the Gordon Beavington's CD of the 1851 census, for > VIZARD's,as I have just found out that my 4 x Great Aunt EMMA EMILY DAVIS > married GEORGE VIZARD on the 30th March 1850, when I noticed a WILLIAM > VIZARD SHIPP in > Iron Acton. As a result of Ed Tily's request on the GLS list for information on lister's backgrounds, I ended up promising some people I'd take photos of various places. I have started the task and published the resulting pictures on my website - which also contains my first attempt to publish the information I have gathered on my HULBERT family of Gloucestershire and North Wilts. Please note the health warning on the family histry stuff - and if you can add to the information, I'd be pleased to hear from you. So if you want to see Cromhall, Tortworth - and the former prison building at Northleach - try starting at http://www.zyworld.com/hulbert and follow the link to the places in South Glos. To follow : a page of older photos including one of the Dike of Beaufort's militia, and photos of Hawkesbury Marilyn
