    1. [[Hawks]] JENKINSON - forwarded
    2. Geoff Brightman
    3. Unfortunately I did not know my Father well, his name was HENRY (HARRY)JENKINSON, mother was MARGARET TASKER, spelling suspect, but she had siblings JIMMY, FLORENCE issue PAULINE,EDITHm BILLY MAC, AND MARY. My mother thinks they were Jewish of chezovlakian origin. MARGARET was a matron at a local hospital and remarried BILL WILLIAMS, after the death of her first husband. He was killed in an automobile accident where a woman mistook her acelarator for a brake in 1934. My father was from monied parents, he was home educated and the JENKINSONS enforced a protestant upbringing on him. At 14 years of age they tried to make him a ward of court. He was an extremely bitter man as a result of his upbringing. I am trying to research his past in the hope of understanding what made him reject his family on moving to South Africa. Thats it folks. Looking forward to not being dunked in the pond. and although he did say his cousin was a Baron, I was never sure. There are two JENKINSON lines, one from Lancashire and the other from your part of the woods. His father was killed in Manchester. I have been trying to contact the other JENKINSONS. His mothers last address was Cheetham Hill. She worked at Prestwich Mental hospital and then moved to a Creche. Before she dies she worked at a home for the blind- Seemed to be a game old girl still active until late 90s, but she also would not answer any questions. The family names were HENRY and ROBERT so he told me. Basically I can see I will need birth certificates to be sure. Any info will be interesting though. 2. Robert Millard
    3. Hi Brian Comely The Eggshill common that John refers to is in Yate he is correct in there are Lucy Stinchcombs else where but the fact she has been asked twice where she was born both times she says "Yate" there are Stinchcombs living in Yate and close by who are named Arthur, there is a thought that they may have been Quakers and not recorded in Cof E but I would think Arthur was from Yate and therefore might be able to trace him back to Nehamiah from Hawkesbury who we know he died in Chipping Sodbury which is more or less Yate, I will soon search the local churchyards for STINCHCOMB burials we will see what can be found. Eggshill common was a coalmining area about Lucy's time I think pay book's etc have survived just might find something there. regards Robert Millard

    3. The following is from John to whom I apologise publicly fopr my lask of contact. To Brian, I think your Lucy is more likely to have come from a Stone branch of the family rather than Hawkesbuury. Her proposed father could be the Arthur in 1851 census index at Eggshill Common(?) age 65,b Newport,GLS,which is just N of Stone where his birth is registered-IGI Lucy seems to have been a very young bride! john s Geoffro The Pond Dipper Http://www.HawkesburyFamilyHistory.co.uk

    1. [[Hawks]] WAS IT LUCK
    2. Robert Millard
    3. Hi Fellow listers What a nice day we had in sunny Hawkesbury and what a lucky day as well, but more about that later. The Pondipper suggested we visit the Beaufort Inn at Hawkesbury today" just in case they were having a sale" realy the excuses he comes up with, We called at Horton Church on the way as its so close to Hawkesbury, we did find some M I's of interest to listers which will be posted shortly. After a splendid lunch at the Beaufort (the Dipper said to keep mentioning the Beaufort as he hopes to get a free lunch next time) we went to St Mary's in old Hawkesbury to look at a headstone where we met three people in the graveyard (yes they were solid) the first was Patrica GUNISH and her husband a couple of locals from Melbourne Austrailia Patrica was looking for the grave of James RODWAY her ancestor who married Alice or Ann(both names are listed)TROTMAN on 28 May 1759 they were married in Bristol and moved back to Horton and also their daughter Mary C. RODWAY B. 1769 they probably had more children so if anyone can help with any knowledge of this family please let the Dipper know. The other person we met was John SERMON he was looking for his relative Capt John SURMON and his wife he lived at Petty Fance which if you don't know is in Hawkesbury he died 1861 he was incharge of the 10th Gloucestershire Yeomanry born 1780 had a well documented military history said to be buried with his wife at Hawkesbury but may not be at St Mary's but else where in Parish?again any help please we have John's Email Address. "Was it luck" well due to the Dippers need to get to the Beaufort A.S.A.P I ran out of fuel about !/2 mile from the garage I held down the clutch and we rolled to a stop right next to fuel pump. The Dipper later ranout of chewing or smoking tobacco(not sure what he does with it) just as we arrived at St Mary's but Patricia's husband had found a sealed pack in Germany last week which he still had in their car, and they don't smoke! so not only did he have a free smoke but he and Lady Dipper never got to push the car who knows he may get a free lunch soon at the Beaufort. best Regards Robert Millard The Grave Robber who is very short of spac

    3. List members ( of whom there are now 64) will remember that I ended an email by asking "Is there anybody in Aus who isn't related to the THOMPSON's. Our newest Australian list member Roderick COOPER is as you would expect by now related. The Joseph he refers to as being the father of James is of course the same Joseph who had a long relationship with Mary THOMPSON producing lots of offspring with the surname COOPER and COOPER-THOMPSON. It is still unknown when and where they married. Roderick is a 6th cousin 1 removed to Mrs Pond Dipper and of course cousin's Doug and Marilyn as well as being a cousin to cousin Bob LAWRENCE. Welcome to the family Roderick.....which of the 3 children of Llewellyn COOPER do you desend from. When did they emigrate etc. Where are you no ? Mail me your number and we can have a chat....... Alternatively you can contact me by adding GeoffBrightman@hotmail.com to a MSN Messenger or on ICQ number 83859152 There is every possibility of the 1841 census appearing on the site as soon as every living soul in Australia has been in contact ( More from the Grave Robber on this later) and as soon as time allows. The next index to appear is likely to be an index of strays from Hawkesbury appearing in the 1851 census which is kindly and painstakingly being compiled by Bernadette SIEBERT in New Zealand. New pics will hopefully be added later this weekend. Geoffro The Pond Dipper Http://www.HawkesburyFamilyHistory.co.uk

    1. [[Hawks]] COOPER - new list member
    2. Geoff Brightman
    3. I am forwarding the following as it was meant for the list ........what a nice man he is !!!!!! Dear Pond Dipper - Greetings from the Antipodes. What a great bloke you are for putting together this site .It is, at least in potentia, a real gem. I believe that one of my G-G-Grandfathers was Llewellyn Thomas Cooper born 16/4/1842 at Upton in the Parish of Hawkesbury, the son of James (born circa 1815 in the Parish) and Ann Lewis (born circa 1821 in the Parish) who married in the Parish Church 11/10/1840. James was the son of Joseph (described as a farmer on the marr. cert.) about whom I know nothing else. Ann was the daughter of Thomas (a carpenter). A William Cooper and a John Winbow (a name I think I've seen somewhere on your site) were witnesses to the marriage of James and Ann. As you can probably tell I'm very much the beginner in matters genealogical and the internet but I hope this communication is of some interest to you and/or the Society. Do please pass on my email address to anyone who may be interested in responding to the above. Best wishes and keep up the good work, Roderick Cooper P.S. Any chance of the 1841 census appearing on the site? Geoffro The Pond Dipper Http://www.HawkesburyFamilyHistory.co.uk

    1. [[Hawks]] CHAPPELL FAMILY HISTORY
    2. Rita Hatcliffe
    3. I am quite new to the family history game but I wonder if the following information about my family is, in anyway, connected to anyone else's research and whether or not anyone has any information which may be of interest to myself. My Grandmother was born Emily CHAPPELL, she was born at Long Newton near Tetbury, her father was Albert CHAPPELL and her mother Kate MELLSOM (not sure about the spelling) On the 1881 census she appears at Hawkesbury, the family living with her Grand parents. They were Joseph CHAPPELL, christened at Hawkesbury on 1 December 1822 and who married Martha SIMS on 2 June 1844 at Hawkesbury. His parents were Thomas CHAPPELL and Mary ROLF who were married on 30 April 1820, at Hawkesbury I have found Thomas CHAPPELL who was christened on 9 October 1796 at Hawkesbury whose parents were Richard and Jane, but I do not know if this is the right Thomas CHAPPELL. I believe Martha SIMS's parents were Robert SIMS and Ann THOMAS. On the 1851 census, Albert CHAPPELL, who I believed to have been born in 1850, doesn't appear with Joseph and Martha, but a James does who was born in 1850, perhaps a name change ! I only registered a few days ago, but have been very interested in the e-mails received so far. Rita Hatcliffe.

I actually have the surgeon's report for the 1839 voyage on my site at: http://www.netspace.net.au/~kapana/ship.html But what I really, really want to know, is what is the name of the Indian Bay at which they called on the way out. One of the wilder family stories is that a WICKS married an "Indian princess" and they saw her in that place, where she "come down from the throne dripping in joools". But I just love the picture.
