After an unplanned and extremely fruitful visit to Gloucester Record Office today (with apologies to Janet HESKINS for not seekign her out and saying hello during her holiday there) myself and cousin Bob got to thinking and chatting. In 1826 John COOPER born Hawkesbury but residing in Kingswood (Wilts), GLS left the sum of £100 each to a dozen or so nephews and nieces ( all named in his will - what a find ! ) which they received the following year. Our questions are along the lines of.....how would they have received the money ? In cash ? into a bank account ? What would ordinary folk do with such a large legacy....would they put in in the bank or keep it at home.....where would the nearest bank be ? etc etc. Things we perhaps take for granted these days but 175 years ago ? ANy ideas ?? Geoffro The Pond Dipper Http://www.HawkesburyFamilyHistory.co.uk
Hi Jane, If you are definitely sure that your MEALINGs are from Iron Acton then you would be better served on the Gloucester mailing list itself. However there were also MEALINGs in Hawkesbury so it would be worhtwhile posting a message here about them as well. Geoffro The Pond Dipper Http://www.HawkesburyFamilyHistory.co.uk
I would like to make inquiries about a Mealing family in Iron Acton Parish in the early 1800's. Would someone be so kind as to let me know if I am contacting the correct list. I saw the Gloucestershire but I notice that Hawkesbury is in the name and most of the correspondence has to do with Hawkesbury. If I'm in the wrong place, will someone please tell me what list I should be in. Jane Daytona Beach, FL USA
What a totally amazing person Roderick COOPER is......in one email he has answered so many questions and pulled together so many family branches that I am tempted to grant him immunity from Pond Dippings.....but I cannot be seen to be that soft...sorry Roderick. These are my initial thoughts and as usual I ask for your thoughts and comments....if you think I am wrong somewhere please say so otherwise we won't be able to get it right. 1. The will is that of John COOPER of ? in Wilts., Yeoman? TPD - John COOPER was buried at Hawkebsury on the 20th of October 1826. His abode is listed as Kingswood in the burial register, entry no.323. 2. There is reference to property in Hillsley ( Parish of Hawkesbury ), Parish of Kingswood ( Wilts.), Hawkesbury, Parish of Wickwar, Parish of Gate ( all of course in Glos.). TPD - Gate I think must be Yate.....took us at least half an hour to work that one out. 3. The Executors are his nephews Joseph DAVIS of Hawkesbury and John COOPER ( son of "my brother Thomas COOPER", cooper, of Castle Combe, Wilts. ). TPD - Thomas COOPER mentioned here married Ann THOMPSON on the 14th of August 1790. Ann was born about 1769 and was the 3rd child of William THOMPSON and Patience CHAPPELL. Joseph DAVIS I will deal with later in this mail. 4. Beneficiaries include Giles THOMPSON ( a nephew? ) his wife Mary and their children; Mary BALL ( a neice ), her husband and their children; Martha LEWIS ( neice ), her husband and their children; Thomas THOMPSON ( nephew ), his wife Betty and their children; Thomas, John, Hannah and Ann DAVIS ( the children of "my late sister Hannah DAVIS" ); Joseph, Isaac, Edward, Thomas, James, Mary and Elizabeth COOPER ( the children of "my brother Thomas COOPER" ); Joseph, Thomas, John, James, William, Mary, Harriet and Ann COOPER ( the children of "my brother Joseph COOPER" ); Mary ALLWAY ( sister ); Mariah WEBB of Charfield ( Glos.); Elizabeth PULLIN ( housekeeper ). TPD - Giles is probably the Giles who married Mary DREW of Cromhall in 1797. If so then he is not a nephew but the 1st cousin to Ann THOMPSON mentioned above in answer to number 3. However, further research may show that he is also related in another way. Mary BALL I cannot offer an opinion on yet......save that at some point we are looking for a COOPER - BALL wedding perhaps around 1810 (!)(?) Similarly with Martha LEWIS. Thomas THOMPSON and Betty refers to THOMAS COOPER - THOMPSON and Elizabeth TAVENDER Thomas, John, Hannah and Ann DAVIS are the children of his "late" sister Hannah DAVIS who must be nee COOPER. More will follow on this later tonight or tomorrow when I have had a chance to check files. Joseph isn't mentioned as one of the children here ? I wonder why ? Joseph, Isaac, Edward, Thomas, James, Mary and Elizabeth COOPER ( the children of "my brother Thomas COOPER") are all the family of Thomas COOPER and Ann THOMPSON whom I mention in 3 above. Joseph, Thomas, John, James, William, Mary, Harriet and Ann COOPER ( the children of "my brother Joseph COOPER" ); ...This is perhaps the most exciting part of the will. This brother is the one who is described in an 1806 bastardy bond of Mary THOMPSON as "who has resided for a considerable time with that bounder Joseph COOPER" and is proof of their longstanding relationship without marriage and strengthens our theory that their relationship was "accepted". Mary was 1st cousin to Ann THOMPSON who married the brother Thomas COOPER. Mary ALLWAY nee COOPER eludes me for the moment as does Mariah WEBB. Those are my initial thoughts.......more later Geoffro The Pond Dipper

Thanks Robert for the info. I need to know one more connection and that is George's two sons and daughters name to complete the family line. It is really difficult from such a distance. I would love to make contact with any of the family. My father was insistant that the line was dead or almost so with my brother and I the last of the his line. My stepmother refuses to release any of his documents, which would have made life a lot easier. Any info is most gratefully received. I have an oldish ( 1820's ) copy will of the abovenamed presumably extracted by the Executors during the course of their administration of the estate or perhaps by one of the beneficiaries. Who knows. In any event, although the document is badly water-damaged I have been able to decipher bits of it and perhaps these may be of some interest to list members. 1. The will is that of John COOPER of ? in Wilts., Yeoman? 2. There is reference to property in Hillsley ( Parish of Hawkesbury ), Parish of Kingswood ( Wilts.), Hawkesbury, Parish of Wickwar, Parish of Gate ( all of course in Glos.). 3. The Executors are his nephews Joseph DAVIS of Hawkesbury and John COOPER ( son of "my brother Thomas COOPER", cooper, of Castle Combe, Wilts. ). 5. The witnesses to the will were William WICKHAM, Richard BRACEY and ? BRACEY. 6. The will is dated 28 September 18?? 7. I think the following were tenants of the testator: John RICHINGS, William FORD, John ?, Jeremiah ? and ? FLETCHER ( all I think in the Parishes of Wickwar and Gate. There may well be errors in the above as I'm typing this as I read. Certainly a more legible copy would yield further particulars. I've had the document for years but it was only after looking at it once more following receipt of some very helpful information from Geoff Brightman and Rob Lawrence that things started to fall into place. I had thought the COOPERS confined to Glos. but there would seem to be a trail to Wilts. Regards to all, Roderick Cooper

Just a thought - on my web site I posted a picture of what I called the Duke of Beaufort's Milita - but as my Dad pointed out yesterday, he think's this is the local Yeomanry, not the militia - my grandad's accounts from WW1 shows where the Yeomanry commandeered some of his horses for the War effort. - Therefore can my picture be on the 10th Gloucestershire Yeomanry - can anyone look and tell me?? I have a copy of a book called "The Manor of Hawkesbury and its Owners" by > The Rev. Henry Lyttelton Lyster Denny M.A., published in 1920. It is > basically a family history document on the JENKINSON family. The preface > has this to say... > "This little Memorial of the Manor of Hawkesbury and its Owners is, by his > Widow, Joan Jenkinson, and his Aunt, Augusta Maidstone, dedicated to the > memory of JOHN BANKS JENKINSON, Captain in the Rifle Brigade, killed at dawn > in the Battle of the Aisne, on the 14th of September, and buried at sunset > at Vendresse in the 1st year of the Great War, 1914, in his 34th year." > It contains an extensive family history, as well as numerous illustrations, > photographs and portraits. Hi Adrian and John Re our common Ancestry I am happy with the line back to Daniel STINCHCOMB of 1736 and Sarah GUEST but there is a choice Nicholas for the Father 1/ Nicholas c. 12 Dec 1701 father John and Mother Mary MAISH married 25 Feb 1687 2/ Nicholas c. 22 Deb 1699 father Thomas mother Bridget BENCE married 2 Aug 1697 I think the parents were 1/ John and Mary the reason being Daniel had 8 children Mary , John , William , Elizabeth ,Nicholas ,Joyce, Daniel , Benjamin, the first two names are same as Parents of Daniel. 2nd choice Nicholas c, 11 Feb 1699 could be the son of Thomas and Bridget or Thomas and Ann WIDHAM married 8 Oct 1695 there is one certain child of Anns that is Elizabeth as both Thomas and Ann are named the rest are c.dates only Nathaniel Jan 1698 , Martha Nov 1698 , Nicholas Feb 1699 , Hester Mar 1701 , Mary Aug 1701 , Thomas Apr 1704 , John Jul 1706 do either of you have any clues in wills etc that can confirm or disprove the above. Nehamiah son of Thomas was a Boot maker he lived and had a shop/workshop at Upton where the main villiage is now he first morgaged the property to Ann HARRIS of Ozleworth 21 May 1688 by which time he had moved, one year later he sold all interests in the property, as John has already said he moved to Chipping Sodbury which by this time was a market town presumably he set up shop there as a Boot maker. looking forward to your thoughts on the above regards Robert.
Hi JENKINSON of SA You may well have a connection to Hawkesbury Charles JENKINSON of Walcot Nr Chartbury, in Oxfordshire, during the reign of King George III held various important offices, he later became Baron Hawkesbury, due the the fact his family held the manorial seat and Later Earl of Liverpool, why Liverpool I am not sure?. His son b. June 8th 1770 was Robert BANKS JENKINSON his mother Amelia nee WATTS died in childbirth he became an MP at an early age, and went to the house of Lords as Lord Hawkesbury, on the assassination of Mr PERCIVAL in 1812 became Prime MIinister, from 1812 to 1827 being Englands longest serving Prime Minister. His office ended due to what was supposedly a severe stroke he died without issue Dec 1828 and is buried in St Mary's Hawkesbury. He was succeeded by his 1/2 brother Charles Cecil COPE JENKINSON after who's death the Earldome became extinct, I recall an Elizabeth DRAYFUSS lived at Hawkesbury in the sixties she was aunt to Sir Anthony Banks JENKINSON 13th Baronet. You should find the family history well documented I think there is still a relative of the JENKINSONS still at Hawkesbury today. regards Robert Millard. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Geoff Brightman" <geoff_brightman6@thefreeinternet.co.uk> To: <ENG-GLO-HAWKESBURY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, August 06, 2000 5:28 PM Subject: [[Hawks]] JENKINSON - forwarded > Unfortunately I did not know my Father well, his name was HENRY > (HARRY)JENKINSON, mother was MARGARET TASKER, spelling suspect, but > she had siblings JIMMY, FLORENCE issue PAULINE,EDITHm BILLY MAC, AND > MARY.
