    1. [[Hawks]] Hawkesbury in Wilts
    2. Geoff Brightman
    3. Fortunately Hawkesbury has never been in Wiltshire. Kingswood (near Wotton under Edge) was a part of Wiltshire but at the same time was part of "the see of Gloucster" so was in a way part of Gloucster at the same time. Linda's question prompts me to remind all listers that they should consider Wiltshire parishes when researching Hawkesbury families. The border between GLS and WILTS near Hawkesbury is extremely twisted and there are many parishes within a 5 mile radius of Hawkesbury that are in Wiltshire not Gloucestershire. Many THOMPSON events are recorded in Wiltshire. For example Adrain SHEPPARD earned the undying thanks of the Pond Dipper for discovering an 1814 marriage in Sopworth, Wilts ( about 3-5 miles fom Hawkesbury) of Isaac THOMPSON and Jane PHELPS. 3. Dear Doug, I'm taking a liberty here, but I noticed below that you spoke of the 1841 census, you wouldn't have it for the GREAT BADMINTON/HAWKESBURY area's would you? If you have then you couldn't do me a big favour and see if there are family groups of (1) ELIZABETH or BETTY DAVIS,(2) JOB and ANN DAVIS and (3) WILIAM and JANE MARY DAVIS. They all worked for and lived on the Duke of Beaufort's Estate I'm pretty certain at GREAT BADMINTON? I would be very obliged if you would, and if not yourself, perhaps some kind soul would be able to help. Thanks in advance.Regards and Best Wishes, Mavis Williams, Flintshire. 2. Rita Hatcliffe
    3. First of all thank you to Carol concerning the information about Betty, sister of 'my' Thomas CHAPPELL. We must be related somehow, but I haven't had time to work out quite how yet ! Also thank you to Geoffro for the information about the YOUNG family who were involved with the shop, but I don't think they are any thing to do with me. When would they have kept the shop ? My Great Grandfather was called George YOUNG and my Great Grandmother was Jane or Sarah Jane nee FARMER, he was born in Nettleton and she was born in West Kington. I know that my Grandfather had a brother called Harry or Henry, but I believe he went to London, and there was a sister called Mary known as Polly, who married a man by the name of GREEN, and they lived in Swindon. Now that Carol tells me that Richard and Jane CHAPPELL came from Wiltshire, I am much more of a Moonraker than I ever realised. I have another query that maybe someone can help me with, after Joseph CHAPPELL died, I don't know when but he was alive on the 1881 census, his widow Kate married again to a Dick ? GODFREY, again I don't know when or where, but they were both alive and living in Leighterton, in the early 1920's. I wonder if this means anything to anyone else out there. Unfortunately I shall not be able to join you all at the end of September, but will look forward to being able to meet everyone at the next occasion. I was more successful accessing Bill's Book the second time, and found it excellent. Regards Rita

    3. Hi Listers, Does anyone have any information on George ILES "of Upton in the Parish of Hawkesbury in the county of Gloucester Butcher" who died in 1798? According to his Will he had a son William, daughter Hannah who married John BLUNSON "of Castle Comb in the county of Wilts labourer" and daughter Mary who married James BASEMAN "of Frampton Cotterrole in the county of Gloucester labourer". Is he the George ILES with wife Anne who from the IGI data appears to have had at least two children at Yate (1744 and 1746) and then seems to have moved to Hawkesbury between 1746 and 1752 where they had more children? George left all his property to his son William so was William a butcher or did he become a butcher at Hawkesbury? As a matter of interest George's property is described as the "tenement or dwelling house wherein I now dwell with the outhouses shop stable garden and paddock of ground and premises thereto adjoining and belonging situate and being at Upton in the parish of Hawkesbury aforesaid and now in my possession and which I purchased of and from the late Robert Howett BARTON deceased" Furthermore...... "and all that tenement which I built at one end of the paddock *** and adjoining thereto with the garden thereto belonging also situate and being at Upton aforesaid and now in the occupation of Thomas COLEMAN as my tenant" The Will was made on 6 August 1796 and witnessed by John PROUT, James RODWAY and John SYMONS ( who probably wrote the will). The Will was proved 16 July 1798 - value £100!!!! Dennis

    1. [[Hawks]] My Chappel Family history
    2. Rita Hatcliffe
    3. Thanks to all who responded to my query about a church or chapel at Inglestone Common, sounds as if my mother was right after all. Robert asked about my CHAPPELL history, I did post it before but here is again. My Grandmother was born Emily CHAPPELL, she was born at Long Newnton near Tetbury, her father was Albert CHAPPELL and her mother Kate MELLSOM (not sure about the spelling) On the 1881 census she appears at Hawkesbury, the family living with her Grand parents. (There was a sister called Edith Kate and a brother called Edward) The grand parents were Joseph CHAPPELL, christened at Hawkesbury on 1 December 1822 and who married Martha SIMS on 2 June 1844 at Hawkesbury. His parents were Thomas CHAPPELL and Mary ROLF who were married on 30 April 1820, at Hawkesbury I have found Thomas CHAPPELL who was christened on 9 October 1796 at Hawkesbury whose parents were Richard and Jane, but I do not know if this is the right Thomas CHAPPELL. I believe Martha SIMS's parents were Robert SIMS and Ann THOMAS. Robert also asked if my YOUNG family was connected to the THOMPSON family who ran the store in Hawkesbury, well unfortunately I do not know, my Grandfather Arthur YOUNG was born at Nettleton in Wiltshire in 1874, and I know no more about the family really, other than several of my aunts and uncles were born in Hawkesbury around 1902 to 1910 approx., my mother was born at Tresham in 1916 and sometime in the next few years her family moved to the Mill in Hill Mill Lane between Ozleworth and Wortley. My Grandmother Emily nee CHAPPELL, died in childbirth in 1919 and is buried in Tresham churchyard but without any headstone, etc. Hope that doesn't all sound too boring to everyone else ? I have been trying to read Bill's book on the web site, but I seem to be having trouble getting the pages to show up on the screen in full, has anyone else had a problem, or is it my equipment ? 3. Hello Listers Now that I have finished looking afte the Gloucester list whilst Ed TILY has been on holiday in Scotland I will be able to offer the same leves of service as previously. My apologies to all those waiting for emails from me. Thanks are due again to Cousin Doug who has provided the brains to get part one of Bill THOMPSON's book up onto the webpages. Membership now stands at 70 so it is worthwhile posting and reposting your interests........perhaps you could post some of the names that appear in the wills that you hold. These may link into other families that are being researched. Mrs Pond Dipper has kindly agreed to copy out the Hawkesbury Poor Law index details....this will start on Friday and I will post them to the list as soon as possible after that. Yesterday we looked and attempted to read the Horton registers. Unfortunately due to their condition much information is unavailable. The Grave Robber (Robert MILLARD) and I now own 3 of the 4 Bigland volumes between us....we dont have parishes A - C -YET. Requests for look ups should be head Bigland Look Up in the subject line and incude the SURNAME, and parish..........only memorials before 1790 are listed. Send look up requests to me or Robert. Can those listers who will be attending the get together on September 30th please let me know off list so I will have a better of idea of numbers. So far a dozen or so non computer researchers have confirmed attendance. Ed TILY will be in attendance and his knwoledge of the Sodbury's will be of interest and use to all.
