    2. john stinchcombe
    3. Hello,to Ted in Michigan, Am pleased to see you checking up on bits of our chart as yet 'undeveloped'--I think the 200+ fiche frames for COOK on Glouc IGI put me off a bit in the early days. The last three children I can find from marriage of John COOK and Anna RODWAY are Joseph,b1781;Deborah,b1784;and Susanna,b1786. So we have the options of looking for ano death date for Anna,ie later than the 1780 you quote, or a rather quick 2nd marriage to another Ann(a) Agree this needs resolving, and will keep an eye on it, john s

    3. Hello Barbara, I can't see a connection at the moment but will file it with my strays, thank you. I don't think my Edward SHIPWAY is from Hawkesbury, but if anyone out there can supply me with any info about him I would be gratefull.(parents would be nice!) He was born abt. 1764 (Rodborough?) and married Elizabeth TAYLOR from Stroud, June 18 1789 - parents Daniel TAYLOR and Ann DICKS. I have found 3 children, John b. 24 Oct. 1793, married Eliza ALDRIDGE(my ggggrandparents who came to Australia). Esther b. 1796, who married Edward VINES. and Edward b. 1799, who married Sarah ROBERTS. Regards from Helga in Australia.

    2. Hi Barbara, >just typed in the name WOOLNOUGH and up popped 1840-1853 George Woolnough - Holford Arms in Inchbrook.< Thanks, actually this means that George was innkeeper at the Holford Arms in Knockdown at that time, which is included in the I-K page beginning with Inchbrook.... Strangely enough, when I went to this page I recognised the incumbant at Inchbrook's Crown Inn William HORWOOD as an ancestor of an old girlfriend of mine from 20 years ago back in Sydney Australia!!!! Small world indeed!!! Cheers, Ken Murray

    1. [[Hawks]] Ploughed Out by Marilyn
    2. Geoff Brightman
    3. Ploughed Out was built by one of the Stinchcombe family - my Dad knew the family when we first moved back to the area in the 60's, but I can't remember which one off hand - you can ask him on 30th Sept as he is planning to come to the "do". The story is that like Ted THOMPSON, the Ministry of Ag insisted he plough a certain acreage. Not all of it was suitable in his eyes, and he refused. If you refused, you were compulsory-purchased by the government on behalf of the War effort, and he built/ moved to the cottage on Cold Change and named it "Ploughed Out" as a mark of the disgust he felt at his treatment. Those of you who saw the excellent Channel 4 series "Green and Pleasant Land" will recall a similar story from the Worcester area, and recall the distress and upheaval such incidents aroused

    3. Hi Geoff I was there at the time, and it was the man with the monkeys of Oxlease Cottage who told us the center of Inglestone common was "ploughed out" during the last war as part of the land war effort. Eddie BUTLER's parents lived at the cottage on coldchange hill he was born there in about 1933 since then Danial STINCHCOMB lived there who was the son of Frank (Francis)STINCHCOMB and ??? 3. >>>Also, seeing your mention of Cold Change Hill, can you tell me where it is? Joseph COOPER was living there when he made his will in 1833. Hi Bob, Sorry I thought I had got round to doing this. If you turn left down the hill opposite the monumnet then Cold Change Hill is what you are going down. Cold Change is on the left.....There is a cottage which you can just about see through the trees just before the right turn to Hillesley. Interestingly there would appear to be a DAVIS connection as well but I need to speak to Eddie about that some more yet. Robert The Grave Robber has knowledge of its occupancy during the past 100 years or so which in itself is interesting and may yet lead to more information. Josephs will is interesting..........and it is perhaps becoming more clear now. He writes : - "Whereas I have lately contracted with my neice Hannah DAVIS of Oxleaze in the said parish of Hawkesbury Spinster to sell to her my freehold cottage garden and small orchard thereto adjoining situate at Inglestone Common in the said parish and in the occupation of Charles STINCHCOMBE for the sum of £100. " I wonder if this is what is now called Oxleaze Cottage (next to Oxleaze Farm) and currently occupied by Seb a very nice man with monkeys ? Having read his will again I think that rather than give Cold Change away he gives instructions for it to be sold. I wonder who bought it ? Can we find this out ? Geoffro

    2. Geoff Brightman
    3. The Get Together ( think of a btter name if you can ) will commence at 2pm on Saturday September 30th 2000 at The Beaufort Arms, High Street, Hawkesbury Upton. I have arranged for St. Mary's Church to be open between 3.30pm and 4.30pm for those attending who have never had the opportunity to go inside. As well as members of this list and Hawkesbury researchers who are not online Ed TILY who runs the Gloucestershire List and Liz JACK the internet representative of Gloucestershire Family History Society will also, hopefully, be in attendance. Bring you charts and your photographs and your talking heads and listening ears. We will be taking at least one laptop and probably a fiche reader and fiche. We will have all 4 volumes of Biglands with us as well. The latest count of those known to be attending is 40. However this does not include interested villagers and members of Hawkesbury Local History Society. The potential for us all to come away with much new information is tremendous. Last orders for food at the Beaufort is 2.30pm although food is served in the evening as well (from 7pm I think). There will be plenty of opportunities for walks round the village etc with "local experts" etc on hand if needed.....let me know if there is anything in particular you would like to see and I will see what can be arranged. If anybody is coming via Gloucester and would be willing and able to bring an 83 year old couple from there to The Get Together could they let me knwo off list please. 2. Cold Change Hill is the one which leads from the Monument to Inglestone Common. Half way down on the right is a cottage known as "Ploughed Out" this got its name I believe from a period during the second world war when all of the land was ploughed out for the war effort. I expect some of the older locals will know the full story. There is also an amusing anecdote about Cold Change being snowed in and a haulier tying his horses to a hitching post. When the snow melted they were found hanging from the top of the Monument!! Best wishes, Anne

    2. Linda Barraclough
    3. Hi List, Dumb question time again. Most of my family are from Kingswood, which I have a 1787 map showing as being a detached part of Wiltshire. It shows Hawkesbury as being in Gloucestershire. But I had a feeling, somewhere, that it may have been in Wiltshire at some stage. And I take it that I am correct in saying Kingswood is today in Gloucestershire. Help!!!!! Linda An Australian who is not yet related to the THOMPSON - although I have just had a modern researcher in the Vaiseys contact me who has the surname THOMPSON.
