    1. [[Hawks]] Get together
    2. Geoff Brightman
    3. There are now only 213 hours before the FIRST get together which will commence at 2pm on Saturday Sepember 30th at The Beaufort Arms, High Street, Hawkesbury Upton to which each and every one of you and your families and friends are invited. The response to the get together has been tremendous and the turn out looks likely to greatly exceed that which was initially envisaged. The get together as well as reuniting old school friendships and cousins will also enable people to meet new members of their families who were previously unknown or who members have been corresponding with for years. St Mary's Church will be open for us between 3.30pm and 4.30pm. We have already attracted interest from the media and it is likely that representatives of both the Bristol Evening Post and the Wotton under Edge Gazette will be in attendance. As well as the bar being open throughout there will be a plentiful supply of tea, coffee and orange. As this is the FIRST get together I do not expect that we will get everything right so the approach is very much one of "suck it and see". Those attending need to remember that the restaurant shuts between 2.30pm and 7pm. I am looking forward to meeting all of you and am getting more excited each day. There are a considerable number of Non computer researchers attrending. We also know of a number of villagers who will be attending. I love hearing the old village stories including why the Grave Robber had the best fed dog in town. I understand that one lady is looking forward to John STINCHCOMBEs attendance. Anonymous Anne may decide to reveal herself (!) Let me know if you need directions or anything else. Dont forget to phone etc. Geoffro The Pond Dipper Http://www.HawkesburyFamilyHistory.co.uk Tel : 0117 938 1338 and Mobile 07932 898 902

    1. [[Hawks]] Fowarded SHIPP
    2. Geoff Brightman
    3. Linda & I are stumped again & I wondered if anyone can throw some light on the following. I will try to keep it as simple as I can Ggrandfather HENRY SHIPP b.1845 in Hawkesbury, married SARAH ANN HILLIER b.1851. We know that HENRY had a sister EMILY b.1843 in Bath, and that at their Christening in Hawkesbury in 1848 their Mother was named as SARAH ANN SHIPP but no Father was mentioned. On the 1851 Census HENRY & EMILY were in the house of MARTIN SHIPP and named as Niece & Nephew. Incidentally this same MARTIN b. about 1814 married HANNAH RUDGE b.1816 later was widowed and married JANE they then ran the Beaufort Inn in Hawkesbury in 1881 & 1891. On HENRY’s marriage certificate his Father was named as MARTIN NEALE SHIPP. We have also found a HENRY NEALE SHIPP b.1823 in Yate married THIRZA b.1821 in Old Sodbury but he had a son HENRY b.1861 in Yate so cant be “our” HENRY. Also there was a ROBERT NEALE SHIPP b.1814 In Yate who married ANN b.1811 in Wickwar We are assuming that these three were Brothers and that perhaps their Mother ’s maiden name was NEALE and in fact have found a marriage registration in 1813 for SAMUEL SHIPP & SARAH NEALE and so it would seem that these were probably the Brothers parents. But we still cant identify SARAH ANN SHIPP. Perhaps there was another Brother who married her and then died, or perhaps she was a Sister who had 2 illegitimate children. The only wild card at the moment bearing in mind that EMILY was born in Bath,is on the 1841 census for Bath - HO107/969/3 HENRY SHIP, painter, with SARAH. Sorry, this didnt end up as simple as I wanted for you all. BARBARA SEARCHING FOR SHIPPS

    1. [[Hawks]] WOOLNOUGH 1841, 1851 census details
    2. Hi listers, Almost headed this message "Amazing Coincidences in Genealogy".... Herewith some details of Robert WOOLNOUGH, a Suffolk immigrant who moved to Hawkesbury circa 1837 and emigrated to Oz in 1852 folowing the death of his wife Eliza. Today he has many descendants in New Zealand, where he and two daughters moved in 1855. I first learned about this family when one of the Kiwis moved to Sydney, just two doors up the road from my mother who is descended from Robert's brother George..... small world, eh? George was in Hawkesbury c1837-c1840 and both brothers were innkeepers there when their first children were christened in 1837. 1841 Census for Hawkesbury being that part of the parish called the Tithing of Upton Robert 30 Farmer N Eliza 25 Y Elizabeth 3 b.31/12/1837 Y Mary 1 b. 19./4.1840 Y Dixon Mary 5 1851 Census for Hawkesbury Upton Robert, Widower 43 Farmer Yoxford, Sfk Mary Ann 11 Scholar Hawkesbury, Glos Sarah Ellen 5 Niece Scholar Sherston, Wilt 1846 Schoops Sarah 67 Widow Housekeeper Chediston, Sfk Gardner Henry 24 Farm Servant Hawkesbury, Glos Note, Sarah is Robert's mother whose second husband was Noah SCOPES (or SCHOOPS). Incidentally, I am watching the Olympic Games right now and the rowing is taking place on the Nepean River, which further downstream becomes the Hawkesbury River, one of the most beautiful river valleys near Sydney. Sigh.. memories..... Cheers, Ken Murray, inveterate Aussie stuck in New York researching owners and occupants of Trouble House Inn near Tetbury http://www.labscan.com/trouble/

    3. Hi Tony The birth certificate states WERRETT - so I would have thought that would be correct. I could find WERRETT's in the 1851 census but not HERRETT's - that's why I thought it could be a transcription error. I have a PERRETT in North Nibley and DERRETT's in Wotton under Edge - I hope they're not all interchangeable - I could be in a right mess :-))) Marcia At 15:11 13/09/2000 +0100, elpact wrote: >Hi Marcia >Are you sure its HERRETT and not PERRETT ? 3. Hi I know this is a long shot, but does SKS have access to the parish register :-) I have just received a copy of Hester WHITWORTH's birth certificate - it shows her parents to be James WHITWORTH and Martha WERRETT. I have found a marriage on the IGI for James WHITWORTH and Martha HERRETT 22 Feb 1831 at Hawkesbury. I believe it could be the same couple. Many thanks in advance Marcia Jewell

    2. Hi listers, I know there is some interest here in the name CHAPEL/CHAPPEL. These marriages took place at Long Newnton, a small village near Tetbury. 1731 CHAPEL, Martha m. I'd be happy to check for other names both at Long Newnton and nearby Ashley 1609-1837. Cheers... Ken Murray

    3. Does anyone know if there are any Memorials to HALL, WITTS or FOWLER inside the Church? There are WITTS Graves in the Church Graveyard. EDWARD HALL was the Parish Clerk when he died in 1705 and in the burial entry in the Parish Register it says "Wife will pay". Edward's wife was MARY FOWLER. When I visited Hawkesbury the church was locked and I don't know when I will be able to go down again. Many Thanks, Jocie McBride
