For Ronda Wicks. I,ve been trying to reach you privately but can,t seem to do it (inexperience or stupidity -or both) but would like to trade names. Rosemary Barbour
Hi Looking for Edwards & Dancy/Dauncey in Hawkesbury from the early 1700's. Believe Peter Edwards was a carter in Hawkesbury in the early years of 20th century. Did he marry? Hope you all have a great time at the get-together Regards Kerrie NSW Australia
Dear Rosemary, My Wicks / Weeks didn't end up in Midland that I know of but that doesn't really mean that a branch line couldn't have. I have quite a few names connected and unconnected in my data. I think I may know another researcher who is doing Midland area research and will take a look for you. In the meantime, do you want to try me with yours and we can see if I have anything? I would be glad to help if I can. :>) If you do, please send me a private email so we don't load up peoples' Inboxes. For Rhonda Wicks: Did any of your assorted Wicks (or Weeks) end up in or near Midland, Ontario? Rosemary Barbour
Hey Robert and Sue, Welcome to the list Sue ... You might find the CHAPPELL connection in Sherston, Wilts. I have a William WICKS in my database who married Martha CHAPPEL. On his marriage certificate, he is from Hawkesbury, Glos. and she is from Sherston. (parish record) BUT ... ha ha ha ... in the census, SHE is from Hawkesbury and HE is from Sherston. So far, it's anyone's guess but there are CHAPPEL(L)s and WICKSes and WITCHELLs and WATTS in both locales AND they are all in Oldbury-on-the-Hill too! I think they were doin' some pretty "funny" stuff back then ... probably needed Geoffro and one of those really really BIG Pond Dippins' to set them straight! LOL Oh yes, My George WICKS b. abt 1822 married Mary Witchell WATTS !!! ... in Sopworth, Wilts. and she was from Sherston, d/o Nathaniel WATTS, Labourer. Guess where he was from, according to census ... Alderley, Glos.! (although I am starting to think the census taker had a hearing problem or the info giver was speech impaired and maybe he was really from Oldbury ... I'm still checkin it out. <smiles>) Do you have him in your WATTS data Robert? I have been silent since my return home from England (but not any more! ) as I've been trying to sort out and name my photos. I believe I am almost finished now and will get some webpages up soon for everyone interested. Cheers! Ronda Wicks (Woodstock, Ontario, Canada)

Good Evening, I would like to introduce myself as a new member and also post my (possible) research interests, i.e. CHAPPELL. My GGG Grandparents were Samuel & Sarah CHAPPELL who moved to Littleton Drew, Wilts a little before 1768 when their first child was born. Samuel is known to have been a farmer. I strongly suspect that this couple came from Hawkesbury and that Sarah was the Sarah ISLES who married Samuel CHAPPELL in Hawkesbury on 10 Nov 1766. If any other member is researching CHAPPELL and has any information which may prove useful I would love to hear from you. Best wishes for an enjoyable weekend ahead. Sue Sissons Hemel Hempstead
Geoffro asked us to repost the interests, and these are mine. George HULBERT born Biddestone Wilts 1796, married Hawkesbury in 1819 to Ann COOK. offspring lived in the village until at least the end of the 19thC. His son James, my GGrandfather married to Eliza Jane THOMPSON. I will be at Hawkesbury on Saturday with my dad, Edward HULBERT, who has memories (for example) of meeting CARTER descendents of the Thompson family and some of the Thompsons who moved east rather than into Bristol - so come along and talk to him - see what gaps we can all fill in our knowledge! Marilyn Milton Keynes
This week has seen even more members joining us. If we continue like this then we shall reach 100 before Christmas. Because of the new members and this weekends get together - to which all the new members are of course invited - it is time for you to repost your research interests. Members posting their interests who cannot get to the get together will have their interests displayed and if you are lucky then one of the non computer owners or other visitors may well be in touch with you soon. Despite rumours initiated by The Grave Robber , The Pond Dipper will not be taking a dip in the pond at 2pm - despite being told to go swimming by his GP. Should anybody need help in getting to the get together then please get in touch. The numbers as always are Tel : 0117 938 1338 Mobile : 07932 898 902 I will post a list later of all the research materials that I know will be available at The Beaufort on Saturday. Bring your charts on paper or floppy disk. The photocopier will be there. Talk soon Geoffro The Pond Dipper Http://www.hawkesburyfamilyhistory.co.uk

Hi Geoff As far as I know Rock House is immediatly next to what is now Petty France Hotel on the south side, so therefore it is the first house on the left as you approach Hawkesbury from Bath on the A46. it is now part of the hotel being used to house staff. regards Robert Millard

I went up to the Family Record Centre in London last Tuesday and, among other things, looked for COOPER wills from Gloucestershire. I found a will, proved at the Prerogative Court of Canterbury of Joseph COOPER who died 22 March 1797 at Almondsbury, but is buried at Hawkesbury along with his wife Elizabeth who died 11 August 1797 and a daughter Mary who died 22 February 1775. >From the will, it would seem that also had daughters Sarah and Elizabeth and sons named John, Joseph, Thomas and William (what else would you expect of a COOPER?) Wife and sons are all left various properties, and the current tenants of those properties are named. The marriage of Joseph, and the baptism dates of most of his children, are all on the on-line IGI. How this Joseph links with the other Josephs is another matter, and one which I will try to sort out. I have now details of nine Joseph COOPERs born in or near Hawkesbury over a 150 year period I will bring a copy of the will, and a transcription (still a few words to decipher) to the event next Saturday. John, I'd be grateful if you would look for WITTS in Luckington, Wilts Many thanks Jocie McBride
Hello Listers, you will know that Hawkesbury folk were often closely linked with the Badminton estate, which acted as a magnet for staff from a wide area, including the border parishes in Wilts. Have just been looking at the Luckington register for GUEST families(and possibly SMART) and noticed a whole series of our local names:- CREWE,COLLINS,COOK,CHAPPELL,HOLBOROW,GINGELL,NEALE,SHIPWAY,etc Most of these registers are not in IGI,but have been filmed by LDS-and can also be seen at Trowbridge. In similar vein,Wilts FHS in late '96 published lists of Wilts folk appearing in Glouc Overseers of Poor papers, through 18-19c,illustrating a lot of cross-county movement. Presumably a similar situation applies to Som. ,but have always been a bit dissappointed how few of our folk turn up in Georgian Bath! I have access to the Luckington film for a few weeks, for more spot checks. john s.
