    3. Hi Den Thanks for the transcript of Moses ILES will he was my 6x great grandfather he did farm at Saddlewood the manor house still stands it was part of Hawkesbury parish at one time as was Oldbury on Hill close by it is situated 2 miles Northeast of Hawkesbury to the right of the A46 road just after the junction to Killcott it is now in effect a private estate. In 1851 census he is listed as retired farmer living at Dunkirk as far as I can make out it is the cottage on left past the present Dunkirk farm toward Stoud. He had as far as I knew 6 children but the will says son Daniel makes 7 William b,1792 married Elizabeth ASHBEE from Hawkesbury Elizabeth b.1794 married William STINCHCOMBE Ann b.1796 married Thomas CORNOCK of Slimbridge Henry b.1801 d,1824 buried at Hawkesbury with Moses Thomas b,1802 d,1826 buried Hawkesbury with Moses Hannah b,1808 married Mr Millet d,1844 buried at Hawkesbury with Moses Daniel b,1 Mar 1818 Hawkesbury Moses wife was Ann HANCOCK of Hawkesbury b. 1766 d. 1813 buried with Moses at Hawkesbury all above on 1 Headstone. William is alive in 1851 living with Elizabeth (Betty) at Hawkesbury occ carpenter may have died soon after The Daniel ILES in 1851 Thornbury census would have been born 1808 I don't think it can be the same one so where is he? It seems a coincidence that the next inhabitant of Saddlewood is a Daniel ILES but I cannot find a link so far. By the way in 1851 census Daniel Stinchcombe and Amelia CORNOCK first cousins are living with Moses they have a child Henry CORNOCK b.1847 later they marry and have 4 more children by the STINCHCOMBE name. The Will raises a couple of questions. Did Moses farm at Saddlewood? Unless Saddlewood is in the Dunkirk area I believe that the Saddlewood ILES are incomers as indicated in the 1851 Census. Dorothy Arkell ILES of Saddlewood is buried in Hawkesbury churchyard. Her son Daniel was born in North Cerney. The other question is that of Moses son William. He is not mentioned in the Will so was he dead by March 1851 when the Will was written? Did he fall out with his father? Was he the William who married Elizabeth ASHBEE? Who is the William ILES aged 58 carpenter, with wife Betty in the 1851 Hawkesbury Census? Is this Moses son or another William ILES? Moses son Daniel ILES can be found in Thornbury in the 1851 Census. He appears to have been baptised after his mother died and is enumerated as Daniel HES on the IGI. Anyway on with the Will..... 3. Hi Listers, I too am interested in the ILES/ISLES/EYLES of Hawkesbury and the surrounding area and have read the recent messages with interest. I must admit that I am a little confused with the geography of the area - where was or is Saddlewood? Is or was it just a farm or an area within Hawkesbury? For those with an interest in Moses ILES I have a copy of his Will and will be happy to pass on a transcription if I am contacted off list. Dennis

    3. Hi Robert I think I might fit into this ILES family. One of my ancestors was a Lydia ILES who married Charles WEBB in 1811 in Wotton-under-Edge. Lydia's parents were Edward ILES and Hester SMITH (married Wotton-under-Edge 1768). It seems likely that Edward Iles was the one baptised Alderley in 1743, son of another Edward and Hester. This latter Edward was, I believe, son of the William bp 1655 that you mention below. My information on this family is quite sketchy since I have yet to prove that the Edward baptised 1743 in Alderley is mine. Can you help at all, please? Hi Sue The niece of one of my ancestors married a CHAPPELL in Littleton Drew - Jane KING married Daniel CHAPPELL, yeoman of Littleton Drew, in 1808 in West Kington. Do you know if this Daniel is descended from your Samuel and Sarah? I have a few minor bits of CHAPPELL information from Littleton Drew (baptisms, LTAs) but all after 1800. I can let you have these if they are of any interest. Pauline Kennedy
