    3. With reference to Den's message concerning the ILES family and baptisms etc. at NORTH and SOUTH CERNEY, I don't know if you are aware that these two villages are about 8 miles apart, one being approx 4 miles north of CIRENCESTER and one approx 4 miles south of Cirencester !, so I would imagine that some kind of mistake exists in the entries that are on line. CALMSDEN however is very close to NORTH CERNEY. I wonder if anyone can help me please, Marilyn's message today about ANSTEY / ANSTEY speaks about the 1881 Census for LONG NEWNTON, if anyone has access to this, I would be grateful if they would look and see if there is any MILSOME / MELSOME / MELLSOMEs listed and also if anyone has a copy of the 1891 census for HAWKESBURY, would they look and see if Albert CHAPPELL and wife Kate and children Edith, Edward and Emily (at least, could be more by then) appear anywere, because I am unsure when he died. Thanks a lot. Rita

    3. Since Saturday I've been trying to find more about my grandfather's (Edward George HULBERT) best man. Mr T Anstey was known to have been a friend "from way back" but we knew of no links. Norma SAMS however had a photo of the family and remembers staying with them "during the war" - so its a fair bet there is more than a passing link. Norma is a THOMPSON /CARTER/SPENCER descendant. Now I've been looking at the 1881 census and find the record below for a family of Anstee's. with a "T~" of approximately the right age, a father born in Doynton and a servant who is very definitely a Hawkesbury stray with a name with known links to my own family!! Pphhew what a cooincidence! What is more Long Newnton is just south east of Tetbury, and is now in Gloucestershire! So - 2 things - Can anyone help fill in gaps between ANSTEY / ANSTEY and Thompsons, Carters Spencers or Hulberts, and is anyone interested in Sarah STINCHCOMBE, the Hawkesbury stray? 3. Hi All Sorry I missed the gathering on Saturday - you wouldn't have wanted me there with my bugs - I'm now working on next year's celebration! I missed the chance to sell you all a copy of one of my Glorious Gloucestershire CDs. There are four of them altogether but the one you will be interested in is Volume 4. This covers the ancient parishes south of Gloucestershire down to but not including the City of Bristol. Volume 4 has over 2000 photographs on it including more than 60 of Hawkesbury and Hawkesbury Upton. A treat not to be missed!! Christmas is coming - why not treat yourself and your cousins overseas......? The photographs are organised so that you can view them individually in your own software (they are in .jpg format). But, better, the CD will automatically run your web browser (Netscape or Internet Explorer) and allow you to select the parish of your choice from an index, show you thumbnails of the pictures available and then allow you to enlarge them to full screen size and greater to see the detail. The other three volumes, each with over 1000 photographs, are: Volume 1 North Gloucestershire Volume 2 The Severn Vale - Gloucester, Cheltenham and Tewkesbury Volume 3 Forest of Dean and Leadon Vale Each CD costs 15 pounds (or 30 USD) including postage anywhere in the world. Cheques made payable to E Jack and sent to: Mrs E Jack 11 Old Cheltenham Road Longlevens Gloucester GL2 0AS England I am sure you will enjoy the product! 2. den toms
    3. Hi Dave & Robert, I thought I would check up on our Daniel ILES aged 49, born in South Cerney and living with his sister Dorothy born Castle Eaton, in the 1851 Hawkesbury Census. Dorothy must be the Dorothy Arkell ILES buried at Hawkesbury with her parents William and Elizabeth. This implies that Daniel's parents are also William and Elizabeth. In the 1881 Census of Hawkesbury is a Daniel ILES aged 79, born in Calmerdon and living at Saddlewood Farm. He also has a daughter Dorothy. According to the 1851 Census data Calmesden is part of North Cerney. This must be the same Daniel. Looking in the IGI there is a record for the baptism of Daniel ISLES on 19 Jan 1802 at North Cerney - parents William ISLES and Elizabeth. Furthermore there is another record for the baptism of Daniel ISLES on 19 Jan 1802 at South Cerney - parents William and Elizabeth. It looks as though these are identical records for the same person. Checking the IGI for other offspring of William and Elizabeth there appears to be Sarah bp 1800 at South Cerney and Giles bp 1803 at North Cerney. Sarah also has an identical record for North Cerney. A check of the 1851 Census and hey presto a Giles ILES aged 48 and born North Cerney, living just down the road at Rangeworthy. Is this the same Giles? Giles ILES aged 78 born Calmesden can be found in Cirencester in the 1881 Census. Is this the same Giles? Now Dorothy Arkell ILES was born around 1788 at Castle Eaton (WIL) according to the 1851 Census and her sister Mary (who is buried with her) was born around 1789. There is an awfully big gap of about 12 years between these birth dates and the probable birth dates of Sarah, Daniel and Giles. Have I got the right families? Is there another generation in between? Then there is William ILES aged 57 born Casle Eaton and living at Hillsley in 1851 - he has his niece Dorothy ARKELL living with him. Is he part of the family? Quite a coincidence of names and places if he isn't. It still appears to me that these ILES are incomers to the area. But why should they all move to the area? The plot thickens! Dennis

    3. Hi John STINCHCOMBE I have been looking at the family of Noel Edward STINCHCOMBE who you told me on Saturday moved the whole family to Monkswood Chapel Usk it must have been at some great expence to take most of the family. I looked at Kelly's Directory of Monmouth 1901 it lists a Henry as Farmer of Chapel farm but interestingly it shows the Duke of Beaufort as Lord of the Manor, the village from the map in the directory appears as an enclosed parkland estate similar to Badminton the church was totaly rebuilt in 1883 partly at the Dukes expence, I would think that there must have been some kind of arrangement between Noel Edward and the Duke which was to their mutual advantage to move to Monkswood did you find any reference to this in the Badminton Papers. The local pub was called The Beaufort Arms run by John GUNTER I wonder if this is a Hawkesbury GUNTER. Regards Robert Millard.

    3. Hi Den I was looking for STINCHCOMBE's and found Henry and Elizabeth in Cardigan he was the station master but visiting were Mary Ann ILES and Emily Jane ILES Elizabeth Ashby ILES (wife of Henry) was Marys sister but had not come across Emily before she was listed as being born 1853 so missing the 51 census The Daniel son of Moses who was listed baptised in Hawkesbury 1818 to Moses and Ann must be wrong as Ann died 1813 if this Daniel was born 1808 he would fit with the one in Thornbury, I am fairly sure I know which house Moses retired to at Hawkesbury and one of the other houses he owned. Have you seen the Daniel living in South Cerney who is listed as Farmer and runs lunatic asylum must have kept him busy I am sure these families are closely linked but cannot see how. I have traced Moses line back to Nicholas ILES b.1630 Hawkesbury they always seem to have references to Saddlewood Regards Robert Millard ----- Original Message ----- From: "den toms" <denzil@yate74.freeserve.co.uk> To: <ENG-GLO-HAWKESBURY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, October 01, 2000 11:26 PM Subject: [[Hawks]] Moses ILES Grandchildren? > Hi Listers, > For all those interested in Moses ILES have they noticed these in the 1881 Census data? > I think they are all Moses ILES grandchildren. 2. Geoff Brightman
    3. Loved your web site! Its so rare that I come across anything which is actually relevant to my family history. I'm trying to find some information about Thomas Watts born about 1820/21 in Hawkesbury(according to the census). He married Emily Whitfield and, in the 1851 census they are at Falfield,(Miller) with his mother-in-law, Eliza Whitfield and several kids. His son George (b. abt 1848) is my gt grandfather. George married Sarah Gwinnell Sept 1877 in Bristol and they moved to Cardiff. Thomas was still lliving with his mother in law in 1881, this time at Woodford - occupation = Miller (C). The IGI has 2 Thomas Watts chr 1820 and 1821 but I've no idea whether these are accurate entries, and if so, which Thomas is mine. One Thomas is the son of Morris Watts & Esther chr 19 Aug 1821; the other Thomas as the son of Daniel & Sarah, chr. 15 Mar 1820. The IGI also has a Hawkesbury christening of Mary Jane, (4 May 1845) daughter of Thomas & Emily. I have not found their marriage yet. If anybody can help with my family I would be delighted to hear from them. Carole Sharp (in Cardiff)

    3. I have just inherited some old maps of the area. My family once owned land in and around the village in the time of my grandfather, John Robert Bayly A'Deane. He died in 1924 and the land was subsequently sold. The land was about 80 acres in scattered fields. There are names - Splatt's Wood, Long Coombe, Friths Wood and other unnamed patches of land around Hawkesbury Common. I would be grateful if you could suggest how I can find out how we came to own these bits of land so far from New Zealand and any other information about the village and it's early inhabitants. Any information would be welcome. Ngaire Jackson (nee A'Deane Tollemache)

    3. Wow..........who would have imagined it. The first of our Get Togethers a total success. Forget about changing the name. We are stuck with it now for centuries. Many thanks to all those listers who attended. Without your presence the success would not have been possible. I am overwhelmed at the numbers attending and the number of connections which were made by those who attended. Whilst I am grateful to receive your thanks I must point out that if it were not for the Grave Robber none of us would have been there and neither would any of the resources which were there. In truth it is Robert who deserves your thanks more than I do. It is Robert that did all the hard work and put up with me worrying about it. I am working on A Get Together page as I type this mail which will include the photogrpahs which many of you have already sent through to me. What we need now is reports from those of you who attended of the connections you made, the cousins you met, the photographs that somebody brought that had your family members in them. Your funny stories of the day etc etc. Many thanks to cousin Marilyn who spent hours scanning photographs..........did you know that Anonymous Anne and Marilyns dad were not exactly strangers to each other having shared dances in the past !!! John Stinchcombe also renewed an acquaintance with a lady friend from 35 years ago. Hope to meet you all again next year. Geoffro The Pond Dipper Http://www.HawkesburyFamilyHistory.co.uk
