Hi John I thought I had answered this one before, Rock House is the house to the left of Petty France Hotel opposite Bodkin House now owned by Petty France hotel to house staff. Cant help with SURMAN burials I am afraid hopefully we might have more information on burials at St Marys soon something may turn up. It does seem stange there is no obvious memorial for such a prominent person. regards Robert Millard ----- Original Message ----- From: "John S Sermon" <design@johnsermon.demon.co.uk> To: <ENG-GLO-HAWKESBURY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, October 09, 2000 1:42 PM Subject: [[Hawks]] Surman Family > I make a second appeal for assistance > > Can anyone please help me find the graves in Hawkesbury churchyard of; > Mary SURMAN buried 22 Sept 1857 aged 84, of Petty France > John SURMAN buried 9 June 1865 aged 81, of Petty France > Jane SURMAN buried 12 June 1865 aged 38, of Upton > > Also I am looking for Rock House, Upton > > Hope someone can help me > > John S Sermon > -- > ------------------------------------------------------------------ > John Sermon NDD FCSD FRSA > chartered designer > 24 Monks Walk, Bridge Street, EVESHAM, Worcestershire WR11 4SL > tel; 01386 49967 > E-mail design@johnsermon.demon.co.uk > www.johnsermon.demon.co.uk > ------------------------------------------------------------------ > > > ==== ENG-GLO-HAWKESBURY Mailing List ==== > Email the Pond Dipper at ThePondDipper@HawkesburyFamilyHistory.co.uk > > ============================== > Ancestry.com Genealogical Databases > http://www.ancestry.com/search > Search over 2500 databases with one easy query! > > >
Hi Robert I'm doing BEARD'S of Gloucestershire, local to your area Wotton,Kingswood,Dursley,Didmarton Etc. My Family came from Berkeley, through your area and up into Wiltshire, Oldbury on the Hill, Hillmarton & Calne. Interested to know what you got, Alf Beard
At the Get-together I was talking to someone interested in the Carter family and she gave me the names of the family from Hillesley who are buried in Hawkesbury churchyard (Dora Ruth, Harold Victor and Michael V.J.) Since then I have made some enquiries and found a living relative of these CARTER's - his name is Keith Edward CARTER and he lives locally. I have his telephone number and if the lady concerned contacts me directly off-list I will let her have his telephone number. He is quite interested and would like her to ring him. I have also noticed whilst looking back at the Hillesley Baptist Church MI's that there are CARTER's buried there also. Arthur Llewellyn CARTER is the old man I was talking about at the Get-together. It isn't obvious from that list of memorial inscriptions that Ruby Ellen CHAPPELL is also a CARTER - I am 99.9% sure that Arthur Llewellyn CARTER was her father - he certainly lived with her. Ruby had children (2 I think) who are probably still around locally. Best wishes, Anne (not quite so anonymous)
Attention WATTS researchers (and others who may be researching the surnames of WITCHELL, SMITH, HODNOTT, MORGAN, and DAVIS) . I want to try out a line of descent of each of you for comparison with your own notes and data . to see if any of you can shoot a hole in what I've put together (or confirm it). This is because, it is all taken from IGI data and I have not seen any of the actual records. Please remember, it is not completely proven and shouldn't be taken as fact at this point but WATTS is a large family and for this reason I am asking for your consideration. Here goes: Mary WITCHELL WATTS c. 8 June 1834 Nailsworth Independent, Avening, Glos. (married George WICKS / WEEKS in Sopworth, Wilts. In 1852 - George was "of Alderley") She was a daughter of Nathaniel WATTS, Labourer and Ann DAVIS. Her brother, John WATTS was also christened on the same date and place as her. 2. Nathaniel WATTS c. 27 Apr 1806 Hawkesbury (married Ann DAVIS on 1 Sep 1833 Hawkesbury). He was a son of Daniel and Sarah WATTS. His siblings were: Mary WATTS c. 27 Apr 1808, George WATTS c. 8 Jul 1810, Daniel WATTS c. 19 April 1812, Robert WATTS c. 8 Aug 1813, William WATTS c. 2 Jun 1816, Maurice WATTS c. 16 Nov 1817, Thomas WATTS c. 15 Mar 1820 and Joseph WATTS c. 7 Sep 1823. All were christened in Hawkesbury. 3. Daniel WATTS c. 1781 Wotton under Edge (married Sarah _____, may be another WATTS on 27 Feb 1804 in Hawkesbury). He was a son of John WATTS and Ann MORGAN. His siblings were: Thomas WATTS c. 20 July 1783 Wotton under Edge and Jane WATTS c. 1 Aug 1784 Oldbury on the Hill. 4. John WATTS / WATS c. 12 Sep 1749 Wotton under Edge (married Ann MORGAN on 27 July 1777 at Oldbury on the Hill). He was a son of John WATTS and Esther HODNOTT. His siblings were: William WATTS c. 17 Mar 1745, Mary WATTS c. 27 Oct 1747 and Thomas WATTS c. 21 May 1756. All siblings were christened in Wotton under Edge. 5. John WATTS c. 3 May 1713 Westonbirt (married Esther HODNOTT on 1 May 1745 in Newington Bagpath). He was a son of Walter WATTS and Hester SMITH. His siblings were: James WATTS / WATS c. 21 Jun 1708, Thomas WATTS c. 6 May 1711, Nathaniel WATTS c. 10 Apr 1715, Hester WATTS c. 7 Apr 1717 and Mary WATTS c. 25 Jan 1718. All siblings were christened at Westonbirt. 6. Walter WATTS c. 24 Feb 1681 Oldbury on the Hill (married Hester SMITH on 4 Aug 1707 in Westonbirt). He was a son of John WATTS / WATS and Mary WITCHELL. His siblings were Thomasin WATTS c. 9 Sep 1679 and Mary WATTS c. 3 Aug 1684, both christened at Oldbury on the Hill. 7. John WATTS married Mary WITCHELL on 10 Feb 1678 at Oldbury on the Hill. Hopefully some of you may be able to prove me wrong or right and then I'll know how close I am to being on the right track. My quest has been to find out where WITCHELL falls into my WATTS line. While it seems improbable that a family would carry one specific name through six generations it is still possible if, say, every generation's Mary had it for a middle name and there is only one generation that I can see without a Mary and that doesn't mean anything really - maybe I just haven't found that Mary yet! And maybe they all remembered Mary WITCHELL of generation 7 because perhaps she was the 'old lady' with the loot! LOL Anxiously awaiting your input and HAPPY CANADIAN THANKSGIVING! If our leader can abuse the list by sending anniversary greetings then I, can do the same by saying: A VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE POND DIPPER. He's 38 today!
Hi Geoffro and list Happy birthday!!!!!!!! REED, may this be the REED or REID family of Horton and Tormarton, I believe there was also a REED who was a collateral to THOMPSON at Hawkesbury. I havent got the two named persons on my file but it is a lead in Best wishes Tony
As a result of the tremendous response to last weekends Get Together and the disappointment felt by some at not being able to attend and because of the new connections that are being made as a result I have bowed to pressure and offer the following. Christmas Dinner will be served to members of the Hawkesbury list, Hawkesbury family researchers, their family and friends etc at 1pm on Saturday December 9th. The cost of the 3 or 4 course meal is likely to be £15 and those wanting to attend will need to book in advance. A non-refundable deposit may well be required as well. The aim of this is to be more "social" than "research" based although obviously those attending will want to be linking and sharing etc. I will post a menu as soon as Mark at the pub lets me have it and details of booking and paying deposits etc. I already have 7 firm bookings. Any thoughts ? Geoffro The Pond Dipper Http://www.HawkesburyFamilyHistory.co.uk

Amongst the papers of David THOMPSON formerly of Hawkesbury and 8 Grove Road, Fishponds, Bristol are 2 invoices from Greenbank Cemetery, Bristol. Both are in the name of purchaser Annie REED. The first is for John REED aged 73 in 1904. The second for Ann REED aged 89 in 1912. The cost and funeral times are given. Annie REEDs address is listed as 81 Chelsea Park, Easton. Johns address is the same. Ann REED has address listed in 1912 as 5 Walton Street, (possibly Stapleton Road). The plot numbers are given. If you recognise these and can explain why they would be with THOMPSON papers I would be most grateful. Are they yours ?...... Geoffro The Pond Dipper Http://www.HawkesburyFamilyHistory.co.uk
Thank you very much Marilyn for looking at the Long Newnton Census for me. Adrian asked about my interest in the name MELSOME/MILSOME etc. I have a copy of my grandmothers birth certificate which shows that she was born at Long Newnton Dec 1879, her father was Albert CHAPPELL who is from Hawkesbury and her mother was KATE MELSOME (Could be MILSOME). The 1881 census has the family living in Hawkesbury with the CHAPPELL grandparents, the childrens' birthplace is given as Newnton, but KATE's is shown as Hibden, Glos (any ideas anyone ?) She was born about 1860. My interest in the census for Long Newnton was because I wondered if she had family there and that was the reason for living there. She had had her first child at the age of 17. I have looked at your website Adrian and found it very interesting. I would be delighted if it proved to be that some of your ancestors were mine as well, as you have so much information there. Rita
Hawkesbury Listers will know that cousin Marilyn has a pic on her web site of a CARTER - HULBERT - THOMPSON group in front of a 5 foot high copy of the City of Bristol Coat of Arms. With Marilyns permission I sent it to the Bristol Times ( a supplement to the Bristol Evening Post) who printed it with an appeal. We were then contacted by John CRUMP who though born Bristol now lives in New Zealand who reads the newspaper online. He was interested by the THOMPSON link and the mention of Hawkesbury. John's parents were only children so he grew up without first cousins. He has another brother in NZ. Unfortunately his brother and sister who are still over here were both on holiday at the time of the Get Together. After phoning John it soon transpired that he is a 2nd cousin to Marilyn, Doug and Mrs P. news which he was over the moon with. Auntie Doreen immediately identified their mother, her cousin Grace on a pciture John sent which his son bought him as a birthday present after our first contact. Johns brother Mark and Carol, John;s twin sister visited Me and Mrs P tonite. When this was arranged on Tuesday they said they would brng some "bits and pieces". They did. They brought David THOMPSON's wills (both o them). David the G Grandfather to them all is the Uncle that is mentioned as buying Laburnum Cottage on Inglestone Common in Bills Book. Believe it or not it gets BETTER.....in his second will David says - " I desire to be cremated and my ashes scattered on the Grave of my Mother at Greenbank Cemetry, Bristol". His mother was Mary Jane THOMPSON who in 1881 was living at Back Street with Edward her husband. I have actually lost count how many listers are direct descendants of Edward and Mary Jane THOMPSON but I can recall that Mary Jane was 4th cousin 4 times removed to The Grave Robber. Despite wanting to be cremated there is a undertakers bill for what appears to be a headstone - an inscription of 70 letters. In case the BLAKENEY researchers are wondering David made provision for Annie his 2nd wife in both wills and it would now appear that Annie may not have died until 1954.....or maybe the first few months of 1955. David clearly owns Laburnum Cottage in 1922 but at his death in 41 is living in Bristol and despite numerous properties being listed in the 2nd will Laburnum Cottage is not one of them. I wonder why ???? There are many other delights amongst the papers including clues to trace a THOMPSON that went to Liverpool, the married names of other granddaughters and their children. Thanks to lister Linda BARRACLOUGH for forwarding this. I have sent fraternal greetings from all of you. ************************************************************** The reunion of ALL the descendents of the pioneers of the Hawkesbury and Macdonald Valley is only 6 weeks away. To date many hundreds will be attending and probably many more than we anticipate as it has been well advertised in various family history groups and magazines. We would love to make it a truly wonderful and fruitful event for all. If you think that you can make it for just one day or both I would appreciate being advised in order to purchase sufficient tea and coffee as everybody will talk their heads off and need liquid refreshments. For further details see below for the URL that will take you directly to the page on my Claim a Convict site. There will also be a game each day which will give you the opportunity to gain your very own Certificate of Freedom or Ticket of Leave. An Iles roughly in the Hawkesbury area in Men & Armour 1608 is John Moncks alias Iles, at Old Sodbury, aged about 40. I have been researching solely the Iles surname for some time now and my focus has been on the Bitton area. By coincidence the two Iles families (headed by Walter & Henry) who were getting married and baptising children in Bitton, during the first half of the 17th century, were also using the surname Iles alias Monk (or vice versa). I have the Will of a Thomas Iles - 1675/76 (son of Henry Iles alias Monk) and Thomas mentions "Coson Moses" although I have never found this Moses in Bitton records. I also have firm evidence to suggest that the family members sometimes dropped the Iles or Monk which only helps to confuse research. I have also come across mention of a Nicholas Iles (with no apparent baptism source of burial exit). When sweeping the onlone IGI in the early part of the 17th century I have found the odd entry for a John Monk (Iles bit dropped) of Old Sodbury baptising children. It might be worth keeping an eye open for Monk (Monck, Munck) entries when next scanning through parish records? Could the Bitton & Hawkesbury Iles be linked in the 17th century? Hi Marilyn Re: The Sarah STINCHCOMBE that is listed below, I think she is the daughter of John STINCHCOMBE and Ann Maria BLAKEN of Hawkesbury b 1860 regards Robert Millard PS there is an ANSTEE family at Wickwar ----- Original Message ----- From: "Marilyn Moffat" <marilyn@moffat-mk.freeserve.co.uk> To: <ENG-GLO-HAWKESBURY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, October 04, 2000 1:14 PM Subject: [[Hawks]] Another mystery - ANSTEY, and a stray STINCHCOMBE > Since Saturday I've been trying to find more about my grandfather's (Edward George HULBERT) best man. Mr T Anstey was known to have been a friend "from way back" but we knew of no links. Norma SAMS however had a photo of the family and remembers staying with them "during the war" - so its a fair bet there is more than a passing link. Norma is a THOMPSON /CARTER/SPENCER descendant. Now I've been looking at the 1881 census and find the record below for a family of Anstee's. with a "T~" of approximately the right age, a father born in Doynton and a servant who is very definitely a Hawkesbury stray with a name with known links to my own family!! Pphhew what a cooincidence! > What is more Long Newnton is just south east of Tetbury, and is now in Gloucestershire! > > So - 2 things - Can anyone help fill in gaps between ANSTEY / ANSTEY and Thompsons, Carters Spencers or Hulberts, > and is anyone interested in Sarah STINCHCOMBE, the Hawkesbury stray? > > Dwelling: Long Newnton > Census Place: Long Newnton, Wiltshire, England > Source: FHL Film 1341616 PRO Ref RG11 Piece 2552 Folio 126 Page 10 > Marr Age Sex Birthplace > John ANSTEE M 60 M Doynton, Gloucester, England > Rel: Head > Occ: Farmer Of 350 Acres Employing 5 Men 1 Boy > Elizabeth ANSTEE M 58 F Pucklechurch, Gloucester, England > Rel: Wife > Occ: Farmers Wife > Thomas ANSTEE U 22 M Shorthood, Gloucester, England > Rel: Son > Occ: Farmers Son > Henry ANSTEE U 21 M Wellow, Somerset, England > Rel: Son > Occ: Farmers Son > John ANSTEE 16 M Wellow, Somerset, England > Rel: Son > Occ: Farmers Son > Mary HIGHNAM 11 F Doynton, Gloucester, England > Rel: Visitor > Sarah TITCUMB M 30 F Shorthood, Gloucester, England > Rel: Visitor > Sarah STINCHCOMBE U 22 F Hawkesbury Upton, Gloucester, England > Rel: Servt > Occ: Servt (Domestic) > > > > ==== ENG-GLO-HAWKESBURY Mailing List ==== > When replying to messages please make sure to remove ALL the "Re: and Hawks" bits in the subject line as otherwise these will be repeated. > Penalty for non-compliance is a Pond Dipping. > > ============================== > http://www.ancestry.com/dailynews > FREE newsletter on the current events and topics important to today's > family historian. > >
Florence THOMPSON born in Hawkesbury in 1888 lived to be over 100. She spent most of her life in London. Geoffro The Pond Dipper Http://www.HawkesburyFamilyHistory.co.uk
Barrie COX (?) kindly brought a book of the Cotswolds with him to the Get Together. Contained within was a picture taken in Sherston, Wilts of F H THOMPSON, baker and confectioner with a car, horse and cart and hand cart (or barrow - forgive my ignorance). Investigation shows that F H THOMPSON was the son of Henry William THOMPSON and Ellen HOLMAN a native of Devon. Francis Henry ( Frank) was born in 1884. He married Violet Ivory DIX and they had 2 children Gladys in 1907 and Henry Samuel ( Sam ). Sam died last year. To make things easy (!!!!!) for THOMPSON researchers Gladys married Thomas Ralph THOMPSON and had a daughter Josephine who has supplied the details in this mail. Frank was apprenticed out to a baker named - yup you guessed it - THOMPSON in Bristol somewhere near Horfield.....could this be David THOMPSON ? The THOMPSONs have a long history in Sherston although it is not yet known whether the Hawkesbury THOMPSONs are linked to the Sherston. The last of the pics that I have received to date from the get together have now been added to the web pages. I will let you know as and when further additions are made. I am attempting to open negotiations to secure the distribution rights of the film taken by Simon "Spielberg" HEDGES. Geoffro
