    1. [[Hawks]] THOMPSON
    2. Stringer
    3. Hi, Vivian's message provided a nice seque for me. I'm researching my newly-discovered THOMPSON family. Mine have roots in Bitton/Swinford/North Stoke/Upton Cheyney (back to early 1700s). One branch was recently discovered in Publow, and I'm aware of other Publow researchers. Parts of my family relocated to Selly Oak, near/in Birmingham by the 1861 census. Some favorite family names have been: Coster, Lawson, Sumption (just discovered a THOMPSON/SUMPTION marriage). One year ago I had the name of my GGGgfather, James THOMPSON, b. 1795, North Stoke. He married Hester MEERE in Bitton. I also had their daughter, Mary Ann, who ended up marrying her MEERE cousin. I discovered that James/Hester had 12 children, and that James' parents were BOTH Thompson. I know Hawkesbury is a few communities away, but mine seemed to have travelled a bit, and I thought I'd ask. I'll be unsubscribing Monday/tomorrow night (thought I had another week before Thanksgiving!!) and will miss list postings until I return. I'm happy to share what I have so far. Thanks. 1. [[Hawks]] CHAPPELLS
    2. Robert Millard
    3. Hi listers I am looking for any connections to CHAPPELL family especialy Richard who married Ann STOCKWELL they had 3 children as far as I know Isaac b.1795 (my 4x great grandfather) James b.1797. Frances b.1801 all at Oldbury-on-hill (originaly part of Hawkesbury parish) from details I found at the GRO Isaac says his family moved to Hawkesbury abt 1805 they may have lived elsewhere before this Isaac at the age of 15 was contracted to work for John CHILDS Inn keeper of Charfield for 1 year for £3 at a mop fair, he ran off after 8 months and joined the South Glouscestershire Malitia did 5 years service, he married Jane (surname as yet unknown) in St Pauls Bristol abt 1814 and had 5 children James b.1817 Isaac b.1820 Sarah b.1822 William b.1824 Fannia b.1826 all by wife Jane she dies soon after and he marries Elizabeth Gingell at Hawkesbury 1849 same year as his son Isaac marries just to confuse matters, I have traced his son James who in 1881 is living in Back St Hawkesbury a pensioner from Royal Marines also at house as house keeper is Alice CHAPPELL his niece born Portmouth 1865 which would perhaps suggest his brother William was also in Navy but I can find no record of him or Alice being at Portsmouth. Sarah marries Isaac CLARK at Hawkesbury 1846. I have recently been able to trace the CHAPPELLs back to William and Agnis DEANE abt 1565 at Oldbury-On -Hill and it seems very possible that most local CHAPPELLs of all spellings can be traced to them including the ones from North Nibley, Hawkesbury Hillesley, Castle Combe, Malmsbury, Easton Grey etc regards Robert Millard

    3. Hi Dennis I have no reference number - there were none listed in my source. I extracted all the Iles wills held at GRO, from two books held at Gloucester Library. I have since emailed GRO on numerous occasions simply quoting the name, parish and date and they have sent me a photocopy of the will with no problems. 2. Very nicely said, Rhonda Alistair and I ventured downtown to Vancouver's Victory Square, as we do every November 11, and watched Al's dad march, ever more frail, with ever more pride. Then we sat in the Legion with several over 70 gents, as we do every November 11, and remembered, through their eyes. It's a wonderful experience which we wouldn't trade for anything - Lest we Forget. 1. [[Hawks]] Mary COOPER
    2. R.P. & A.L. Lawrence
    3. Trying to tidy up all my COOPERs, I found the marriage at Hawkesbury on 14 May 1865 of Mary COOPER (age 23, dau of Edward COOPER) and John GARLAND. Checking back in the so useful transcription of the Hawkesbury IGI, and the 1851 census, the father Edward seems to be the son of Thomas COOPER and Ann THOMPSON, bap at Hawkesbury on 11 March 1801. He seems to have married Henrietta HATHAWAY at North Nibley on 24 Dec 1825, and according to the census they had children Edward (born c 1837 North Nibley) and Mary, who was born c 1842 at "Cherry Road", but was bap at Hawkesbury on 26 Feb 1853. Can anyone help with the following: 1. Did they have other children? 2. Where is "Cherry Road"? Is there any connection with the Radbourne Cherry which I found as a place somewhere (but cannot find now) Anyone else out there working on this COOPER line? Bob Lawrence

    3. Hi Derek, Thanks for the information. The Zacharius ILES you mention could very well be his brother. Do you have a reference for this will since it is not on the list I obtained from the Gloucester Record Office? I have a couple of birth and marriage references to ILES in that area but as yet have not pursued them. Zacharius could very well be the start of this offshoot. Dennis

From: den toms <denzil@yate74.freeserve.co.uk> > > My one question is - did the term "cousin" mean the same in 1727 as it does now? > Not necessarily - the word "cousin" could also mean "kinsman" (or "kinswoman"). So "cousin" could mean aunt or nephew or any other relation - including an in-law. Pauline

    3. Hi Dennis I have encountered similarly termed relatives in my own research and from what I have read on the topic, the term "cousin" is most likely to relate to what we still term a cousin today, but it could also be other types of more distant relative ie second cousin etc. However, it is most likely that it does relate to a relative and not just a close family friend - sometimes referred to as "Kinsman". There is also a Zacharius Iles of Westerleigh parish who left a will proved 1728. Might this be the brother?
