James - you may be interested to know that "Men & Armour 1608" lists a Francis Francombe, husbandman aged about 40 and his son John, aged about 20, at Old Sodbury. Evening All, You may have seen previous publicity concerning the FreeCEN project - the Internet-based 'free-to-view' project that will enable researchers to view details of UK Censuses between the years 1841 and 1891, especially the ability to search by surname across census years and counties. I am sure that you will agree that to have this facility is an important step. In particular, it will considerably help researchers that cannot visit the U.K., or even those in the U.K. who find difficulty in travelling. Great progress has been made already, and some pieces are on-line. Check out http://freecen.rootsweb.com/ However, to put all those details on line does require a lot more effort. Even if you can only afford a few hours per week, please seriously consider offering your help as transcriber. Free software, procedures and all kinds of help are available. As county co-ordinator for Bristol and Sth GLS I am always looking for volunteers to help with this county's transcription. Please come forward and volunteer your help on this important project, I look forward to hearing from you. Regards, Bernadette FreeCens Coordinator for Bristol & South GLS
Hi Paul Its just a possibility that Margaret married Thomas WORKMAN who lived at Norton nr Malmsbury Wilts close to Richard FRANCLYN we don't know of his first wife who he married prior to abt 1608 but interestingly his son was named Richard and daughter Margaret we know his wife was deceased by 1630 because of a marriage contract with a second wife, it would be worth checking burials about this time for a Margaret. Here's a little bit of information on the Workman family. The will of Richard Francklyn, of Sherston Magna, Wilts., yeoman, dated 4 May 1608, proved 14 July 1608 at the Archdeaconry Court of Wiltshire, gives to his daughter Margaret and her children; the will of Richard's widow Joan, dated 18 Sept. 1612, proved 24 Feb. 1613/4 in the same court, gives to daughter Margaret Workman. Margaret was baptized 17 August 1578 at Ogbourne St. Andrew, Wilts. Richard Francklyn (1541-1608) had freehold land at Rockley, a tenement in Marlborough, and acquired land in Sherston by 1585. Does anybody know who Margaret's husband might have been? Paul Gifford
Hi James Pat has been researching the FRANCOMES and WORKMANS for many years and lives in New Zealand, I'm sure she will reply as soon as she reads your message for some reason she works all night and sleeps all day?. Meanwhile below is Richards Will transcribed by Pat, the GRO has a large number of FRANCOMBE wills in the online index, I would say the two 1620's wills for Old Sodbury are a must and the Doynton earlier Wills also, there is a Will for a Richard at Tortworth, wills are your best bet for going back also check the Canterbury index. Hi Patsy I think I was in touch with your cousin about 2 years ago the most likely candidate for Daniel is that of Daniel CHAPPELL born Hawkesbury 1745 son of Daniel and Esther nee TANNER married at Wotton Under Edge but the trail ends there I cannot find anymore details, Its most likely Daniels father came from Oldbury On the Hill, the CHAPPELL families in Glos can almost without exception be traced to Oldbury and one of the 4 trades they can be divided into for centuries in Oldbury were masons, many more CHAPPELL's much later went to mine coal in Wales but there seems to be no "native" CHAPPELL's on that side of the Severn.
