Hello one and all (and especially Sue) Rummaging through my papers I came upon the half-transcribed 7 page Will of Richard WATTS, gentleman of Oldbury on the Hill 14 Nov 1778. I know that his mother was Elizabeth and I have her Will also - Elizabeth WATTS of Didmarton probate 6 May 1730, names daughters Susannah POPE, Mary MANNING and only son Richard WATTS (This Will is on Robert's website). I can link Mary MANNING to Giles MANNING of Tormarton (Will on Tormarton pages of Robert's website) but I'm still missing the POPE connection. The interesting thing about Richard WATTS is that he was a Quaker. He seems not to have married and I have yet to find his burial. He names kinsmen: Thomas POPE Robert POPE Sargent of Staines in Middlesex Martha and Sophia and John ?BARLOW/BASTON/BASLON John BOYE and Mary his Wife (of Oldbury) Richard /MILL and his now wife (of Oldbury) John PLAYER of ?Hope, GLS William HOLBOROW of Great SHERSTON, WIL Yeoman Richard FFOWLER of Tetbury, Shopkeeper, Henry ?WILKINS of Cirencester Woolstapler John ?WILKINS of Nailsworth, GLS Woolstapler Richard WATTS leaves land in Oldbury on the Hill, Kingswood, WIL, Malmesbury, WIL, Great Sherston, Didmarton and Hawkesbury. The PRO have a Tithes examination dated 5 July 1753 which reads something like this :"Defendant Richard WATTS.. being one of the persons named as Quakers... rents a farm from John BOY at Luckington. He hath dwelt and resided when at home at Oldbury on the Hill and that Daniel CLARKE the other defendant resides in the messuage of Luckington looking after the farm and lands on behalf of the examinant (Richard WATTS) John Boy is said to be, late of the city of New Sarum Wilts, tanner, but now of Oldbury on the Hill.. If there is anyone with any connection to these people I would be pleased to hear from you. I suspect that they were all Quakers and confirmation of this would be welcome. Best wishes Carole
Hi Trevor As you say William and Sarah KINSON appear in Hawkesbury around 1730 about this time there was also a family of KINSONS in West Littleton Nr Tormarton its possible William came from there. If we have had discussions on KINSONS in the past and its very probable you can search the archive at rootsweb its on the same page as the "subscribe" ENG-GLO-Hawkesbury is found. regards Robert Visit my web pages at http://www.hawkesburyhistory.co.uk ----- Original Message ----- From: "tflake" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, November 23, 2003 8:53 PM Subject: [HWK] Kinson/Skinson > Hi, > > I have just joined this Hawkesbury mail list. I am interesred in William and Sarah KINSON who appeared to arrive in Hawkesbury in the early 1730s - but where from? Trevor Lake
Hi All I have moved my web pages to a new address see below it will be easier to remember I hope not everything new on it is fully functional at present but shortly I hope to have a search engine up and running just little problem with the version of Frontpage extensions on the new server, my E mail address has changed also to [email protected] but both my old address and old web site address can still be used for the foreseable future. I have added additional Wills and an additional page to People and Places www.hawkesburyhistory.co.uk/hpp mostly old village postcards another page to follow. regards Robert ps I am removing the Hawkesbury background to the pages to speed up page loading so in future all willl have white background. Hi Robert Many thanks for the information on James CHAPPELL, I could not place him. Someone emailed me about him, they are descendents of one of Elizabeth WEBB's sons. I should think perhaps there were no children from her marriage to James. Thanks again. Regards Cynthia
Hello Helen, My partner has CHAPPELL connections galore - her mother was a CHAPPELL. I've traced the family back as far as Charles CHAPPELL born about 1815 in Henbury, but no definite Hawkesbury connection as yet. (I found the Hawkesbury site while looking for Thomas TAVENDER or TAVENER whose daughter married Charles' son, William Charles CHAPPELL. I couldn't pin him down to Hawkesbury but I'm still hoping something will turn up.) We're off to California tomorrow for a couple of weeks, but if you think my Charles CHAPPELL may be connected to your CHAPPELLS please get in touch. Having sorted out (????? more or less!) my WITCHELLs thanks to some very kind listers on here, I have now got the marriage of WILLIAM WITCHELL to MARY CHAPPELL which took place in Didmarton on 1st November, 1733. If anybody has any CHAPPELL connections, would love to hear from them.
Hi Synthia James CHAPPELL was my 3rd Great Uncle he was the son of Richard CHAPPELL and Anna STOCKWELL he firstly married Hester HOPKINS 8th Dec 1823 at Hawkesbury and then Elizabeth WEBB 9th Nov 1843 at Hawkesbury, I have never found any children from either marriage but Elizabeth had 2 sons Sidney and John WEBB. James was born at Oldbury on the Hill 1797 his parents moved to Hawkesbury abt 1799. His brother Isaac CHAPPELL is my line I have traced them back to abt 1525 at Oldbury on the Hill. Hester CHAPPELL born 1771 is the daughter of James and Sarah nee RODWAY Hester CHAPPELL and James CHAPPELL are 2nd cousins 1 time removed. Their common ancestors are James RODWAY and Mary STINCHCOMB. That makes them related to just about everyone in Hawkesbury regards Robert ----- Original Message ----- From: "Cynthia Betteridge" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, November 21, 2003 4:27 PM Subject: [HWK] CHAPPELL !! > Hi Everyone > > I would be grateful if anyone could give me any details on James CHAPPELL > and Elizabeth Webb who married in Hawkesbury in 1843. Hi Does anyone have information about Edmund COOPER, who is shown age 17 living with George Pepworth at Horton in 1851, and may have been baptised as an adult at Horton in 1847, the son of Joseph Cooper and Harriet Simmonds. He is related to the rest of the Hawkesbury Coopers. Incidentally, Edmund had brothers Enoch, Edgar, Eli, Edward. Edwin, Ezra, Ethelred, Ephraim and Edmund as well as the more usual John, James and Joseph. His sisters were named Ann and Hannah. I have been contacted by someone in North America trying to establish a link with an Edmund Cooper who was born England in 1826 but was living in Ontario in 1856.
