    3. Jane, I have seen the name in Wiltshire census but will have to wait until I get home this evening to check. 3. Hi Robert, I wondered if you or anyone else could help me yet again! You were good enough to discover that the family of Timothy Sherwin BROOK (BROOKES) was likely to come from Hawkesbury. Since you sent me the information I have been trying to prove this correct or not. Unfortunately I have been unlucky with this. So far nothing for the 1841 census or 1851 census for London. Have you any idea's on how to prove that I have found the right people? Regards Caroline Ps May I wish you and all the other's on the list a belated happy New Year!

    1. [HWK] TOGHILL, CHAPPELL, ETC
    2. R.P. & A.L.Lawrence
    3. From: R.P. & A.L.Lawrence [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: 01 January 2004 12:06 To: Maurice Catt Subject: [HWK] TOGHILL, CHAPPELL, ETC Joan Thanks for your message. I have a lot of information about the TOGHILL family, although as you will gather there are a number of mysteries, and they seem to have a habit of marrying their cousins, having illegitimate children, not registering births marriages and deaths, etc. Walter Toghill was the son of Mary Ann Toghill, nee Chappell. However, by the time of his birth in 1883, Mary Ann was a widow, her husband Hugh Watts Toghill having died in 1876. So one question is who Walter's father was. Have you seen his marriage certificate, which might give this information? Mary Ann has at least one son before her marriage: this was either Alfred or Daniel, or possibly both. I assume the father in this case was Hugh Watts Toghill. Her daughter Rosa was born in 1880, again some years after Hugh's death. Hugh Watts Toghill, from whom Walter got his name if not his genes, was the illegitimate son of Daniel Watts and Jane Toghill (nee Watts). Daniel and Jane were first cousins, and Jane was the widow of Thomas Toghill. She was living with Daniel when Hugh was born in 1841, and married him at the church of St Philip and St Jacob in Bristol on 4th March 1851. My own link with the Toghills is through Charles, a son of Thomas and Jane. Charles was the second husband of my gt-gt-grandmother Elizabeth Cooper nee Tavender. Toghill seems to be a local name, and there is a also a place called Toghill at the junction of the A46 Bath/Stroud and A420 Bristol/Chippenham roads. Many of the Toghills one finds in Hawkesbury are descendants of Stephen Toghill and Mary Britten, who lived at Marshfield. I also have an interest in the surname since I remember a Peter Toghill of Birmingham University who did a lot of work on the geology of Shropshire, where we lived in the 1970s. I have always wondered how he fitted into the family. My information on the Chappell family is limited. I cannot find the baptism of Emma Chappell in my database of Hawkesbury baptisms, and the Beavington transcription of the 1851 census shows her living at Oldbury but born Badminton. I note that John Chappell's wife's name is given as Caroline, but if she was 20 in 1851, she was too young to be the mother of the 7 year-old Emma. If you, or anyone else, can provide hard information about the Chappells, I would much appreciate it. I am sure it has been published on the list previously, but I did not take notes. In particular, who was the father of the brothers John and George Chappell, who lived together at Oldbury in 1851. I tried checking on the Morgensterns, but although I found them in the 1881 census, I cannot find them in 1901. Possibly a transcription error. Looking forward to hearing from you (and, incidentally, where do your Sargents come from?) If you have a spare certificate that is of no use to you at all then you can either send him the details via email, or send him the certificate. If the certificate is sent to him then it will be sent on to any enquiries. After six months if nobody has claimed the certificates as interesting to their research then they will be deposited at the SoG library. 3. Carole Thanks for that further information. It may have solved one puzzle, but it leaves similar puzzles of who were Elizabeth Toghill and Mary Ann Toghill. My only suggestion for Elizabeth is that she was Jane's sister and the widow of Stephen Toghill. This means that she was born Elizabeth WATTS, who was baptised 30th March 1795 at Hawkesbury and married Stephen at Hawkesbury on 3rd May 1817. Stephen died at the Horse Shoe Inn, Downend on 18th June 1833. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find Elizabeth or Henry CROOM in the 1851 census for Bristol or Gloucestershire, so I cannot chcek her age. I have no idea who the Mary Ann Toghill was who married John Howell. Again, I have not been able to trace them in the 1851 census. The only Mary Howell is a 72 year old pauper widow living at Hawkesbury, who seems an unlikely candidate. Any suggestions would be most welcome. I do not have a birth date for Jane Toghill, although in the 1861 census she is 29, indicating 1832, but in 1881 she is 47. Her birthplace is shown in 1861 as being Nailsworth, which links with the birth of her brother Isaac two yaers later at Horsley. Her parents were married at Horsley in 1822, but were elsewhere between then and 1834. Many of these Toghills seem to be missing from the 1851 census. Someone who is there is Robert Toghill Watt, age 55, Gentleman, born Dyrham, living at West littleton as brother-in-law with Thomas Gregg, his wife Sophia and their children. 3. Hi Robert, Following your suggestions, it seems that we have identified Mary. Her sister, Sarah RUSSEL married Samuel LOCKSTONE of Little Sodbury at Horton 17th Oct. 1835. She was born Nov 1790, Horton. Parents Jeremiah RUSSELL and Elizabeth (Betty) WALKER, who among their other 9 children had Mary b 1778 Horton. Which leads to an interesting mix of RUSSELLs and WALKERs back to 1703. Sarah seems to have married late in life. I wonnder if Samuel Lockstone was a widower and this was a second marriage. Elizabeth TOGHILL married Henry CROOM 27 Oct 1834 Temple Bristol Mary Ann TOGHILL married John HOWELLS 22 Mar 1846 St Philip & St Jacob Bristol. The fathers for the latter were John HOWELLS & Stephen TOGHILL.(Both marriages from the BVRI) Do you have a birth date for Jane TOGHILL daughter of Thomas & Jane (nee WATTS) please?. I don't have a record of her. I know we have speculated on who George WATTS married before when we were trying to find the connection with Rose COOPER age 10 who was staying with George WATTS & his wife Jane on the 1861 census. jane's surname then was not known. Looks as if another little puzzle may be solved (fingers crossed). 3. Especially for Carole, who will like this. I went to Bristol Record Office, and checked two TOGHILL marriages. Here are the details: 4th March 1851 St Philip and St Jacob Daniel WATTS, of full age, bachelor, Dealer of St Philips, father Daniel WATTS, Dealer married Jane TOGHILL, of full age, widow, of St Philips, Father Hugh WATTS, Farmer Marriage by banns. Witnesses were Elizabeth Croom and Henry Naish. Henry Naish was a witness of most weddings at this church at this time. Jane was the daughter of Hugh WATTS and Betty JACKSON. She previously married Thomas TOGHILL at Horsley in 1822. Jane and Daniel were first cousins. 26th April 1856 St Michael on the Mount George WATTS, of full age, bachelor, mason of Griffin Lane. Father Thomas WATTS, Farmer married Jane TOGHILL, of full age, spinster of Old Park. Father Thomas TOGHILL, Farmer Marriage by banns. Witnesses were W.T.Sladen and Mary Ann Howells. W.T.Sladen was a witness at most weddings at this church at this time. Jane and George were first cousins once removed The second Jane TOGHILL was the daughter of the first Jane. Daniel WATTS and George WATTS were first cousins. Other relationships are too complicated to think about until after Christmas. It is interesting that the addresses and occupations differ from those in the census. Jane and Daniel were in Bristol on 4th March 1851, but back living in Oldbury for the census on 30th March. He was a farmer by then.
