    3. Carole Thanks for the information about Isaac. I understand that Sally is generally a diminutive of Sarah, like Tel and Terry, Del and Derek. There is also a Naomi Ann WATTS, daughter of Sarah Ann, baptised at Hawkesbury 31st May 1857, and I suppose this could be the same mother. However, there seems to be no suitable Sarah WATTS on my files. Following up all the TOGHILLs, I came across a John TOGHILL living in Redcliffe and Bedminster and worked out that he was the son of the Thomas TOGHILL was living at Oldbury/Didmarton in 1881 and 1901. John TOGHILL was born at Allington, Wilts and married Mary Jane ORCHARD of Yate in Clifton R.D.April quarter 1874. I cannot find him in 1881, but in 1891 he was living at Evered's Yard, St Mary Redcliffe and working as an ostler, while in 1901 he was at Sligo Cottage, St John's Lane, Bristol and working as a carter. In 1891, living with John and Mary was Mary's brother Joseph ORCHARD, 33, Brother-in-law, widower, ostler, born Yate; Mary J Orchard, 12, scholar; Clara Orchard, 2 and Elizabeth Orchard, 8, scholar. The three children were born in Birmingham. Clara Orchard was still living with the TOGHILLs in 1901. Well, it may help someone. In the Wiltshire 1851 census index, there is an Isaac WATTS, age 8, scholar, born Upton, GLS, living at Malmesbury with James and Sophia AUKLAND as lodger. He is probably the Isaac baptised at Hawkesbury on 20th November 1842, son of Sally WATTS, which then raises the question of who Sally was. 3. Thanks a million for this sharing. Another example of the generosity of researchers worldwide. Something I tripped over the other day. I drove into the cemetery in Dorrigo NSW AUS to see if I could get a good photo of the countryside which is green at the moment. Looked at the grave beside me as I stepped out of the car and yes!! A Hawkesbury connection to the THOMPSON/SHIPWAY and close relative of Gwen Lamie. In Loving Memory of NELLIE HILL AGED 12 1/2 YEARS 17.3.16-10.10.28 LOVED DAUGHTER OF ROBERT & FLORENCE HILL. To those in N America those dates mean 17 Mar 1916 to 10 Oct 1928. The connection is: Samuel THOMPSON/Maria CHAPPEL Wilmot Melhuish THOMPSON/John SHIPWAY Samuel Thompson SHIPWAY/ Helen Jane MAXWELL Florence Nellie Louisa SHIPWAY/Robert HILL Florence Nellie (Nellie) 1916-1928. This is a connection for Doug and probably everyone else in the Hawkesbury area as well. Anne Maye in sunny Armidale .. about 30 + degrees right now and not a cloud in the sky.

    3. Carole I always imagined that cousin marriages made family history easier! I do not really have anything to add, or to suggest, at the present time. There does seem to be quite an age difference between Hugh WATTS and the Jane WATTS you suggested (daughter of George and Anna). I even wondered if Jane was a widow when she married Hugh, and that perhaps her former husband was also a WATTS. We really need to find Hugh and Jane in 1861. Now another question for you. Have you any details? Am awaiting the birth certificate for Alice to find out who were her parents - I wonder if she was a sister of Arthur Hugh" The End of Kay's message My thoughts follow:- 1851 census at Upper Wick Hugh WATTS 22 Unm Farm Bailiff. born Hawkesbury Upton. nephew of Anna WATTS(nee PRITCHARD and widow of George , the son of Alexander & Sarah WATTS) . Hawkesbury Burial Reg has Hugh WATTS of Upton buried Jan 27 1879 age 54, Died in Gloucester asylum I have always suspected that this is one and the same person but didn't expect to find a marriage in between. I suspect that Alice WATTS is the daughter of Isaac & Sarah chr March 2 1870 at Hillesley. Does anyone have anything to add please? Cheers Carole

    2. Lee Paltridge
    3. Hi All I have just received the death certificates for my 3x great grandparents Thomas WISE and his wife Anne Child WISE, nee COSSHAM. The informant of both deaths was their daughter Anne, wife of Lewis WALLINGTON (who were my 2x ggps). Death 2 October 1869 at Pullins Green, Thornbury, Anne Child WISE, Female, 76 years, Wife of Thomas Wise a Plasterer, of Decay of Nature - No Medical Attendant. Informant Anne Wallington present at the death, of Pullins Green Thornbury. The antecedents of Thomas WISE are still a mystery. Death 8 May 1871 at Pullins Green, Thornbury, Thomas WISE, Male, 78 years, Tiler and Plasterer, of Ulceration of the Stomach. Certified. Informant Anne Wallington present at the death, of Pullins Green Thornbury. Some time ago, Rosemary Lockie sent me this quote from Susan Dean's booklet The Cossham Story: "Jesse [COSSHAM] was baptised on 27th February 1756 at Thornbury, married Ann Child on 6 March 1791 and had four children. All his family are commemorated in Thornbury Baptist Church burial ground. Jesse 'carpenter of this town' died aged 41, wife Ann aged 64, son George 'in his 77th year' in 1871, and son Jesse just 8 months ..." then daughter Charlotte, and "Ann Child Cossham died aged 76 in 1869 and her husband Thomas Wise 2 years later aged 71." >From his age at the 1851 census I wondered then if Thomas Wise's quoted age was a misreading of 77, the inscription perhaps worn. It now looks as if that could be so. When we visited Thornbury last year, I had hoped to find this burial ground and memorial, but had not done my homework, so we missed it. Better luck next time, when I will be better prepared with a clear map. Happy days Lee Perth Oz

    3. Hi Bernice I think the area around Toronto especialy the south west was very popular with Hawkesbury folk I have traced a number of STINCHCOMBE's there but one early family predates the 1841 census of England so is a bit difficult, there must have been a shipping company that "dropped off" close by was this farming country or industrial? And as for them WATTS'es they get every where. regards Robert Visit my web pages at http://www.hawkesburyhistory.co.uk ----- Original Message ----- From: "William Ostrander" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, February 06, 2004 3:43 PM Subject: [HWK] Re: Charles BLEAKEN > There was a BLEAKEN family came to Canada with my ggrandfather,Thomas Amos > WATTS, who settled in Toronto.
