1. THOMPSON/SHIPWAY
2. Brian Maye
3. Congratulations Marilyn .. this is a great list even if I have been a bit quiet lately. Am about to head off to Singapore for a few weeks to do Granny duties .. I'm not really that old but it's a hereditary title! So will unsub from one email address and resub with my other one! In the meantime I will be still looking for connections to SHIPWAY and THOMPSON in the Hawkesbury and wider area. All SHIPWAYs and over the 'line' in Wiltshire. THOMPSON .. Samuel (1793-1875) & Maria CHAPPEL (1783-1863) who migrated to AUS per 'Bussorah Merchant' 1839. Their dau Wilmot Melhuish THOMPSON married John SHIPWAY (same ship), son of John SHIPWAY (1793-1855) and Eliza ALDRIDGE/ALDRICH (1792-1849). Obviously they are related to everyone on the List!!! Anne Maye.

2. Linda Barraclough
3. Hi Joan, And any others lurking. I descend from William SARGEANT mar 1774 at Hawkesbury to Ann GOWEN (maybe GOWER???). Their first child, William, was born there soon after, but then they moved off to Kingswood. Cheers Linda (who thinks GOWER would be a good one to claim - he could play cricket, couldn't he???) >Hi Linda, > I was reading your e-mail and was surprised to see at the end of it your >interests as >SARGEANT. 1. Descendants of Thomas Stinchcombe and Elizabeth Marten
2. Jenny Joyce
3. Hi everyone, Here is what I have for the first few generations of the descendants of Thomas Stinchcombe and Elizabeth Marten. I'm still not happy about Thomas born 1672 being the child of Nicholas and Martha. Being born 15 years after his next oldest sibling doesn't seem right.... Anyway, please check out the following and let me know what you don't agree with... I know not all of it is "proved" and I haven't included my level of certainty of these "facts" in the following, nonetheless, give me your feedback. Thomas STINCHCOMBE, b. ca. 1520 at Tortworth, d. 1557 at Tortworth, bur. 1557 at Tortworth +Elizabeth MARTEN, b. 1524 at Hawkesbury, m. ca. 1544 at Hawkesbury, d. ca. 1554 at Tortworth ├── Nicholas STINCHCOMBE, b. before 1551 at Tortworth, d. 3. Ok Everyone, for those of you who don't know who I am here is a potted guide to me, Marilyn, the new List Admin, and my interests. I was born in Cheltenham and my parents were small farmers. When I was 8 they took a farm in Cromhall where they discovered they were only 5 miles from Hawkesbury, the birth place of my granddad Edward George HULBERT. We spent many Sunday afternoon in churchyards looking for evidence and I do remember in the late '60s my dad finding <<readable>> gravestones in Hawkesbury Church and the family history bug was started. (OK - now they are past reading and we didn't transcribe them at the time!) Grandad, to boot, was born in 1865 (1865!!!!!!) and was 65 (65!!!!) when my Dad was born. We were only trying to piece together the "missing generation"! Anyway Edward George's mother was inevitably a Thompson (what else!) and so those are my local connections. They eventually ended up in Cheltenham. Confession time - Robert and I discovered since talking on line that we went to school together at KLB Wotton- but of course it is OBVIOUS I'm much younger (at least a couple of years :-))))) ) Apart from Hawkesbury the rest of my Dad's family (Cook, Wilcox) come from Cheltenham - although one line went there from Somerset via Tetbury - I think following construction projects on the railways. My mother's family (Roberts and Jones)are also from there, with a big diversion to Birmingham and back, with an Irish line (Murray) built in!! Barring crises, I read my mail every day and (don't tell everyone) I'm a software Manager, having started in computer management as a mail administrator! OK - That's me! Have a good evening, Marilyn

So now you know. Hi Marilyn, Welcome and I own protective clothing so the cricket bat will not be a problem <vbg> I posted a message on Tormarton last year and it has been exceedingly quiet since then - so no problems there, either. My interest that applies to all the GLS Lists is the surnames WARN(E) and WITCHELL throughout GLS and including Bristol. I guess The Pond Dipper (Geoffo) just went? An INTRO to yourself *WOULD* be welcome. My own GLS interests are on my Web Site :- <http://homepage.ntlworld.com/philwarn/> Cheers Phil. Tetbury List dad

3. Give me a break guys - Roots web only acted on my volunteering this afternoon, and I discovered I was "it" 5 minutes ago! When I saw they were looking for Geoff (twice) I let them know I could do it at need, rather than let the list become an orphan. So now you know. Rootsweb gave someone else the GLOUCESTER-L list but I have been allocated Tormarton too - so I guess I'd better join it :-) My feeling is that this list doesn't need much admin really as everyone keeps to the rules ... however I don't live too far from The Pond (on a global scale) - and I have one thing else you should be aware of - I own a cricket bat and know how to use it :-) Keep on discussing! 3. Hello John I have an illustration of a man using a breast plough, described as "a large spade for removing turf, having a cross piece pushed from the breast". The drawing is tiny, less than an inch square, and faint with no detail of the implement itself, but you can see how it was pushed. I can scan and send you the page if you would like it, but as you have already seen the painting you already know what it looks like. My little picture comes from an illustrated dictionary edited by the great Arthur Mee, entitled "I See All" which was issued in the 1920s in periodical - I think fortnghtly - sections. My late mother-in-law collected them all as a teaching aid, containing 'a hundred thousand pictures', and had them bound into three large volumes. It's surprising how often I've used these books since I started on the family history trail. Cheers Lee Perth Oz -----Original Message----- From: john stinchcombe [mailto:johnst@waitrose.com] Sent: Monday, 4 April 2005 7:14 PM To: ENG-GLO-HAWKESBURY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: A Digression Hello Folks, Our local lib has a book, Recording Britain, Mellor,Saunders,Wright,1990 describing a project to provide work for artists in early stages of WW2. An item in it which has puzzled me is a painting by A.S.Hartrick of Breast Plough at Tresham--he had lived there for c10 yrs around 1900. In his autobiog A Painters Pilgrimage,1939,he describes life in Edwardian Cotswolds and says he bought the Tresham plough and presented it to the Horniman Museum at Forest Hill, S London. Now I went to the Horniman and asked what they knew about it--young archivist blushed a little and said she would look into it, but heard no more. It may be tucked away in a warehouse of reserve stock, rarely visited, but was discouraged from pursuing this further. Massingham and Hennell,Country Relics,1939 discuss the use of this manually operated wooden implement for cleaning light land of stubble and weeds but have never been able to conjure up image of it going on in our domain--the real surprise is an implication that it went on into early 20c when we think of cultivation by horse about to give way to tractor Any thoughts would be welcome, and apologies if I've asked about it before! ps will return to issue of "how many Thos and Nicholas do we have" when present wave of worries is burnt out--my own line certainly has a couple of points where we have to take Options A or B,without a definitive answer, and I have to rest with that as a reality. bye js ______________________________
