The Index is in quarters. You can start with 1870 as this date is given in the 1881 census. When you find it make a note of the quarter. The registration district and the folio number. (e.g. Rosetta Warriner, December quarter 1870, 8D-4567, York) Then, if you wish, you can obtain a copy of her birth certificate from the place of registration. You can do the same for the death certificate of James. Working forward from 1881. Again, if you wish. I do not know if you are aware of what you will find on the birth certificate.
