Reposting in hopes of help with this brick wall - is anyone out there researching a William Dobson who has come across info that doesn't fit for them, but might fit into the following: William H. Dobson, b. March 25, 1824, Yorkshire (probably Hull) Father probably a merchant, possibly in the shipping business Mother possibly French, siblings unknown Ran away to sea at abt. age 16 (1840 or so), reportedly to avoid ecclesiastical school Came to US abt. 1848 Given occupations during his lifetime: chandler, clothing merchant & clerk, & mason Reportedly had Dobson cousins who settled in Philadelphia, PA who were in the carpet manufacturing business I know there are a lot of Dobsons in Yorkshire - but I do keep trying.
