    3. I've just checked the Oxford Companion to Family History (not the same book I quoted before - sorry I can't remember its title!). The dates I gave would appear to be correct. The only difference is that the dates I gave are the Sunday and the Oxford Companion gives the Saturday. The original book made the point that as the 1861 one was taken on Easter Sunday a lot of people were away from home. This book also had another tip which might help 1901 searchers of elusive ancestors. It said to try what it called "creative spelling" and suggested that you ask several children to write down your name and see what they come up with. This might be very useful after some of the mistranscriptions I've seen so far! Regards Anne
