Dear Peter F I have had so many useful responses to this request I'm overwhelmed. I'm sure that Thomas son of James ATKINSON born Tunstall 1821 remained in Patrington as I find him there in the 1851 census index at f160v and he is living alone in High Street Patrington a confecioner and beer seller in the 1881 census. He appears to have had a son James born about 1857 who became a joiner and was still in Patrington in 1880 when he married. That the beer business was entrenched in the family is apparent though as I found that James J ATKINSON was listed in Kelly's Directory of 1921 as the landlord of the Holderness Inn Patrington although he had become a bicycle dealer by 1929 and a non-ATKINSON was in the pub. The Thomas ATKINSON who moved to Dunswell is someone else. Peter B said that he had been born in Patrington in c. 1817 and his son, Herbert, who was born c. 1869 at Sunk Island just near to Patrington became the publicanat two public houses in Dunswell from c. 1900 before taking to farming in the area. I see no Thomas ATKINSON of an appropriate age in the Patrington district in the 1851 census so maybe he had moved before then. My ATKINSONs moved to Hull before 1841 and lived there, Newland, Sculcoates and Cottingham until late in the century when they moved away entirely. I too have answered on list as there seem to be a number of people interested. Yes, we must compare notes further off list.
