    3. List, Having just come across information that has allowed me to start searching my America families English connections I have some questions. I have what I believe is my ggrandmothers mother and her parents showing the christening of Mary Platt Apr 2 1807 Mappleton, Yorkshire, England. In the 1851 census she list her birth place as Aldbrough. I see on the map that Mappleton is just up the east coast from Aldbrough, would she have been taken back to a parents home church? Also Mary's mother is listed as Docey and in another place as Doce, would this be a nickname for Dorcus? 1851 censu Mary Ann Simpson b. 1807 Aldbrough Jane b. 1829, Hull George P. b. 1834, Hull Elizabeth b. 1839, Hull Caroline b. 1841, Hull Dorcus b. 1846, Hull (My ggrandmother born Dec 29, 1845) Leon

    3. Hello, Mappleton (or "Mapleton" as it is written on one map I have seen) is only 4 or 5 miles from Albrough, so it is quite possible that Mary's parents lived in Albrough, but attended the church at Mappleton. Alternatively, they may have both resided and attended church in Mappleton, but Mrs. PLATT went to a friend or relation in Albrough (perhaps her own parents?) to give birth to Mary. Even more likely is that the person who gave the information for the 1851 Census made a mistake - I have several people in my family whose birthplace on the 1881 Census is given as "Sudbury, Suffolk" but whose birth certificates show they were born in Colchester, Essex. Perhaps if you go back a little further in the parish registers for Mappleton, you might find the marriage of Mary's parents. Regarding Doce(y), I am not sure if it was a diminutive of Dorcus, but I know that the usual spelling for the full name is "Dorcas", a name found in the bible, in Luke chapter 9 verse 36. The name means "gazelle". I hope this helps a little. Regards, David Lamb (Paignton, Devon, UK) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Leon O.
