Hello David I have a small book entitled "Captives of Freedom" concerning Free Methodism in Australia (1837-1901) Indexed in the above book is (sic) David Porteus, b 1830 Ireland c. in the Wesleyan Canvas Church at Pleasant Creek 1850s under the ministry of Rev W Woodall, Commenced ministry as a Home Missionary in New Zealand, recorded at West Coast NZ 1866, d. 1916, buried Box Hill Victoria. He was a member of the Royal Commission on Religious Instruction in State Schools, Victoria 1900. Father of Stanley David Porteus (1883-1972) psychologist, educationist and writer.
