All, I have the Yorks 1891 census, but would appreciate help from anyone else who has access to it. I sent a post in the other day about finding my SNEE family in the 1901 Census. As a result of finding them I searched for their address in 1891, and found them next door! The address was 21 Caroline St, Sculcoates, Hull. Living there were John & Mary Snee and their numerous children. Also there in 1891, but not 1901, was her father, William. I was wondering if anyone could read his surname and his place of birth. I believe his occupation was a 'lath render' and I think it says he was from Essex. The sheet I am looking at is R12-3926 folio 103, page 29. This entry is at the top of the page. All help would be greatly appreciated, especially as this is the first time I have come across her father. Rob

However, the place of his birth looks like "Rotten Dean", which could indicate Rottingdean, a few miles east of Brighton in Sussex. It's not too hard to mix up Essex and Sussex (unless you live there). The surname: "Emp..."? - perhaps a Yorkshire version of "Hemp..."? I looked in the 1881 index for Williams Emp...'s and Hemp...'s born around 1822 in both Essex and Sussex, but didn't find any that looked right. However, if you could find John and Mary's marriage entry, that should give you the surname. Good luck, Arthur Kennedy (in Sussex)
