John RIBY married Mary SCREETON in Skeffling 1868. Is anyone researching either of the above families in the Skeffling/Patrington area,as I would like to find some of Mary`s family.According to her Marriage Certificate she was born in 1848,[1881 Census born Patrington] ,daughter of Robert SCREETON,but the only Mary SCREETON I can find that comes anywhere near is ;Mary SCREETON born 1852 in Patrington, daughter of Robert SCREETON and Susanna.[IGI] This would have made her only 16 at marriage,so I suppose she could have lied about her age.Would 16 be too young.? Any help or info would be very welcome Thank you Pauline[Hull]

No, it was certainly possible then (as now) for girls to marry at 16, and it's also quite common to find an incorrect age on a marriage certificate. But bear in mind that the IGI entry is for a baptism, not a birth, so Mary could have been born some time earlier. You should be able to check this in the GRO indexes, or the national or Yorkshire BMD websites. You may not be able to answer this yet, but I'd be interested to hear if your SCREETON line goes back to the Nottingham area. This name and variants (SCRATON/SCREATON etc) appear in my wife's line, and they are possibly all connected. (Confusingly the IGI lists SCRATON separately from the others, but it didn't seem to have a Mary that fitted anyway.) Arthur Kennedy
