    3. Hi Hull was once the town and county of Kingston-upon-Hull, and is again really as we are now a unitary authority we are the city and county of Kingston-upon-Hull, but most people prefer to think of themselves as residing in the county of East Yorkshire, myself included. From Brown's Illustrated Guide to Hull, 1891, republished by Mr Pye books in1992: "Hullshire, or the Town and County of Kingston-upon-Hull, extends from the Hull westwards to Swanland, a distance of about nine miles in length, and from the Humber northwards to Hunsley Beacon Division - an average distance of two miles in breadth." I can't remember exactly when Hull became a city, but it was in the late 1890s. 2. Extended to Swanland? That is the first I have heard of it. Being a Hessle lad the Hull boundary has always been on First Lane Hessle. Maybe it wasn't like this in 1890 but certainly was during the 20th century.
