Listers: My GGGGrandfather JAMES TRAN life has been "stonewalled" in 1783 which was the year of his marriage to ANN JOHNSON in Mappleton East Riding Yorkshire. I have a copy of the marriage Banns identifying James Tran as a farmer from Carnaby Parish, and Ann Johnson as a Spinster from Mappleton Parish though she may have lived in Rowlston. As a potential of learning of his life earlier in that year I am aware in some limited detail that during the 1700-1800's the law required citizens to hold identifying papers referred to as "Right of Settlement". These papers were issued from the individuals parish and were a means to control the activities and travel of the citizens, the papers also may have personal information noting parents names and so forth. Records in Carnaby have been searched for Baptism , Birth or related activities for James to no avail, however I am aware that some parishes have indexed on Micro and or Disc records of ROS papers.....hopefully these may be a clue to finding James whereabouts in the mid 1700's. Your response would be a great service to my family. Len Tran Puyallup
