Can anybody with access to the 1861 census for Whitby help me decipher the name of the town / parish where my g-g-grandfather was born? He was JOHN MASON (age 62) and is listed in Boghall, Ruswarp, Whitby, page 18, RG 9/3649 and living with daughter Ruth Jones and grandson John Jones. His county of birth is almost certainly shown as Durham but can anyone tell me the town / parish? Doug
Hi Doug, The EYFHS translation of 1861 census has it as CRICK. However it does look like CREAK. If there is no trace of either then I would certainly go for CROOK. I looked in the 1851 census for Yorks and there is no mention of John Mason (52).
