I haven't seen the transcript but have read the suggestions with interest. I have one of my own. Don't laugh! Could it be "Crayke"? (Parish Registers in the Borthwick). The apparent spelling would fit with some pronounciations of Crayke. And whilst Crayke is in Yorkshire it was not within the jurisdiction of York but was a liberty under the Bishop of Durham. Would be interested to hear where you eventually find him. Mary >
Mary I spotted Crayke on an old map of County Durham. It was shown as an inset but I couldn't identify where it was. I've located it now, as you say, in Yorkshire but belonging to Durham. It is only 20 miles or so from Pickering where his children were eventually born. Many thanks for your contribution.
