Hello list, I wondered if anyone had any ideas about the following. John Askam was a grocer who had a shop in Market Place and lived above it. He was there with his family in 1841. His family were there in 1851 and it was still a grocery store. John Askam however had died from cholera in 1849. His address was listed as being 3 Prospect Place, Drypool. I looked up this address in 1851 and found it to be an ordinary house, in fact an ag lab was living there. Questions. 1. Why would he be living away from his family and in what was presumably a much poorer household than he was used to? 2. I wondered whether it was his sister's home and he was being nursed there (his wife had already died). Is there anyone able to tell me who was living there in 1841? Thank you for any help. Best wishes, Linda --------------------------------- Yahoo! FareChase - Search multiple travel sites in one click.
Hello List, I receive emails from both this list and Sheffield List. Linda when you mention a John Askam of Market Place are you referring to Hull? The reason why I ask is that we also have Askams in our family who were grocers, but they resided in Sheffield...my uncle James Dixon married an Alice Askam in May 1921 in Sheffield, her father was an Albert Askam, a grocer and Cutler...interesting coincidence if nothing else. He was born in 1863, but I do not know where, his wife's name was Emily... not sure this has anything to do with your Askams, but I believe that some of the Sheffield Askams were originally from Hull. Regards, Josephine, Ontario, Canada. p.s just remember that a census is a date out of time, an isolated incident of one day. John Askam may only have been visiting the place where he died...I think a much clearer answer would be gained if you sent for his death certificate. It usually tells you who is present at the death, the cause of death, and sometimes the relationship of the person who reported the death.... It would also verify that this is the correct John Askam.. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Linda MacDonald" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, November 22, 2005 6:57 PM Subject: [ERY] Hull cholera > Hello list, > I wondered if anyone had any ideas about the following. > > John Askam was a grocer who had a shop in Market Place and lived above it.
