Hi Doug It would seem to be CREAK, Durham. Never heard of it but it could be that it was a small area which no longer exists. Some of my ancestors were born in Tottenham, Durham and this place was just 2 very long terraces of houses. Tottenham no longer exists. Perhaps someone else may know more. Good luck Judith Kettlewell ----- Original Message ----- From: "Doug" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, November 14, 2005 10:50 PM Subject: [ERY] Handwriting Problem > Can anybody with access to the 1861 census for Whitby help me decipher the > name of the town / parish where my g-g-grandfather was born? Thanks for that Judith, yes it does look like CREAK but I can't find any reference to such a place even with an open search on Google. I wonder if he is listed on another census? I certainly can't find him on 1881. Hi Doug, Are you sure it's not CROOK? That's a town in Co. Durham, and it might have been given in a local dialect. Which, in East Yorkshire would be CREEAK, as in BEEATS for boots! See http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/Misc/Books/FolkTalk/index.html for more about this regional dialect. Graham I wondered about Crook, that would have had a larger population than most of the other likely matches, so has a higher probability. You also answered my un-asked question about the accent. That "Folk Talk" is a great resourse. It's almost an exact match "Crook, a. C. (pr. creeak, sometimes crewk)." Thanks Graham. Ever onward.
