    1. Re: [ERY] Good genealogy software?
    2. Hi Bill My own preference is for everything to be in one file. I have close on 19,000 names. You can chose what you like to do which is either follow what I have done or have three separate files. If you chose the former you can always split the files to as many as you like. All names have their own generated numbering system. This is done automatically for each name you add. But you can give each person your own number. This is known as custom ID. I don't bother with this. I started with using an A4 sheet but found it too labourious and time consuming especially when you want to find one name. I then bought a FT software (not Family Historian) but got fed up with the constant reminders asking me to send my details to their web site in addition there was a lot of weakness in it. So I moved to Family Historian which I find far better. The software is easy to use. Adding a family crest or any photos is no problem and these all appear on the family tree diagram as well as the narrative reports. You can see the Family Tree diagram in full and print it as you see it. A manual is available but I have only used it a little prefering to learn as I go along I am also doing the family tree of a family friend and this is in a separate file so it's no problem. You will have read another listers comments so I hope the above and those comments are helpful to you. Should you go ahead and obtain this there is a very helpful users group who will answer all your questions very quickly. Do have a look at the demonstration on the FH web site. Hope the above helps.
