John MAYNARD entered the Diocesan Training College, York, on 03 Apr 1843. Records reveal that his father was John, a labourer, his age 22 years, and that he was baptised at Halsham on 21 Apr 1819. I know - someone wasn't too strong on maths! The occasion of his baptism appears to be recorded in IGI as John MENNARD: father John, mother Mary. Phonetically, the two surname options have little between them - but should I presume misinterpretation or mistranscription? Or should I stick to my normal rule of never presuming anything that important, choosing instead to visit Halsham and view the record for myself? All later reference to John Jnr. have him as a Maynard, yet google reveals several references to the name Mennard, even John Mennard, as a possibility for that part of the county and around that time. After what must have been a colourful and varied career following his calling, Rev. John Maynard returned close by his place of birth at the time of his death, 03 Feb 1893, when he was the vicar of Burstwick. All recommendations for B+B, or good old fashioned pub accommodation in the Holderness area will be gratefully received :) Brian VARRALL Okehampton
