    3. I read this email with some fascination...I was trying to figure out the relationship of an Apprentice who was bound to a great uncle of mine in the 1700's. I realized that he was not old enough to be a son in Law. It mentioned my uncle's name as father in law to his apprentice. A little while later I came across this informative entry in a book about the Hallamshire Cutlers and their apprentices as follows... 'In many cases the person apprenticing a boy or paying a premium with him is styled his Father in Law'... it goes on to say that... 'in this context this evidently meant 'Step Father', for it will invariably be found used in connection with an apprentice who's father had died'...an interesting interpretation of the term Father in Law. Having said this, I don't think it applied into the 19th Century but I could be wrong...I wondered if Wendy had some problem in assigning the lady on the census to the strict definition of 'Mother in Law' which is usually used?... If anyone wants to see the entry I referred to re the above, it appears in R.E. Leader's book on p.46. The Title of the book is 'History of the Sheffield Cutler's Co'.Printed in 1905.Kindest regards, Josephine.
