Fellow Researchers: I am trying to find information regarding family by the surname of Botham that lived in Sculcoates, East Riding of Yorkshire, during the 1840s. The husband's name was Richard Botham and his wife was Frances (Fanny) Drakes. They were married in 1841 in Lincoln, Lincolnshire. The marriage lists his father as Matthew Botham and her father as Thomas Drakes. Richard's residence is listed as Broadgate and I believe Fanny's was either Waterride South, Watemide South, or Watwide South. It is difficult to make out. The church is listed as Parish Church. Does anyone know what affiliation that would have been? In 1845 they had my great great grandfather George Botham. It is here that I find the district of Sculcoates and the county of East Riding of Yorkshire listed in his birth location info. In 1849 there was another son born, Matthew Botham with the same birth location info. Their other children's names were Richard, William, Mary, and I believe Thomas. The family came to America in the 1860s and apparently spent some time in Canada and eventually wound up in Iowa. There were probably some other places that I don't know about. I know that George Botham lived in Minnesota in the 1880s. After that I cannot find any trace of him. I apologize for any misuse of the words county or district. I am learning little by little about the layout of England. It makes it difficult since some of these places like Sculcoates no longer exist. At least, that's what the lady at the GRO told me. BTW was Sculcoates close to another place by the name of Hull? Any information would be appreciated. Thank you all!
Hi Simone, Go here: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/ERY/Sculcoates/index.html and you'll get all the info about Sculcoates you may want. Unfortunately none of my Botham's were from Sculcoates. Genuki has an amazing lot of info about all of Yorkshire, you should check it out. I have a Hannah DRAKE (no 's') that married a Robert STEPHENSON in Howden, Yorkshire on Oct 3, 1803. Do you think there is a connection? Jane: It may be just an interesting coincidence but one of the witnesses listed on the marriage registry record is a Hannah. However, I cannot make out her last name. The other witness was a John Willoughby. I believe. Sometimes the old writing is so hard to decipher. As far as the Drake surname, on the registry record it is listed as Drakes. From my understanding the two names often get mixed up in the records. Where in relation to Sculcoates is Howden? Thanks! Hi Simone, My wife's family are FAIRBOTHAM from Hull and Sculcoates. However I have just discovered that the family name was originally BOTHAM in the 1760s. James and Ann BOTHAM had 10 children in Nafferton ERY ( to the north of Sculcoates) two of whom were called Matthew ( b 1778, 1779 ) !!! As far as I can see most of the children changed their names to FAIRBOTHAM and a Christopher FAIRBOTHAM moved to live in Sculcoates. I have been unable to trace Matthew any further. This is all probably a coincidence.......but... Best wishes, David Hardy Eindhoven -the Netherlands Simone Moore wrote: >Fellow Researchers: > >I am trying to find information regarding family by the surname of Botham that lived in Sculcoates, East Riding of Yorkshire, during the 1840s. David: There could be a connection since the 1778-1779 birthdate would be in the correct range for Richard's father Matthew to have been born. From my research, Richard was born in 1825. On the registry record it lists Matthew Botham's profession as shepherd. Does this sound familiar in any way? Thanks!
