The question relates to an entry in the 1841 census for Sculcoates. The entry for my 3g-grandfather in the column "Where born: Whether born in same county" is a "Y" overwritten with an "N", all the other people on that page have an clear "Y in that column . It might help to clear up the mystery of his birthplace if I knew the reason for what appears to be an error. My question is: Was the East Riding a separate adminstrative area from the West Riding in 1841? If it was, the original answer could have been, Yes, I'm a Yorkshireman, but No I was born in the West Riding, hence the overwrite. Any comments would be appreciated. Regards - Peter
