    1. RE: [ERY] 1841 census - County definitions?

    3. If he was born in any of the East, West or North Ridings then he was born in the County of Yorkshire. If you are sure the 'N' is overwritten on the 'Y' then it means he was born in another County. Have you checked him on the 1851 or 1861 census? If not, and would like me to check, let me know. Jennifer MacPherson New Zealand. -----Original Message----- From: Peter Johnson [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Wednesday, December 07, 2005 9:28 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [ERY] 1841 census - County definitions? The question relates to an entry in the 1841 census for Sculcoates. The entry for my 3g-grandfather in the column "Where born: Whether born in same county" is a "Y" overwritten with an "N", all the other people on that page have an clear "Y in that column . It might help to clear up the mystery of his birthplace if I knew the reason for what appears to be an error. My question is: Was the East Riding a separate adminstrative area from the West Riding in 1841? If it was, the original answer could have been, Yes, I'm a Yorkshireman, but No I was born in the West Riding, hence the overwrite. Any comments would be appreciated.
