I love your anecdote about the 'spot'! I wonder which Mr Scruton of Foxholes it was. John Scruton of Foxholes died in 1917. I have a letter from him written to his niece (my namesake) & brother in 1914 just after John's wife died. He says he may not keep on 'the girl' working for him as her family has 'bad blood'.
