Could anybody with IGI and Scarborough knowledge help me understand an IGI entry please? It is for Mary Oman, christened in "Scarborough, Bts, Yorkshire" and the name is written as <Oman> Only the mother, Jane, is named. Are the brackets some way of saying she had no father? I had not seen this before. What exactly is Scarborough bts? Dare I ask! If anyone has access to the records, I would love to know if anything more is said. I am pretty sure she is the lady who married my John Clarkson in Seamer in 1812. Thanks again Dennis
Hi Dennis, I have had a look at this entry for Mary Oman, and it does look like she was illegitimate, as only her mother's name is on the Christening. I have no idea what the Bts means though.
