Melton is There could be several reasons he was registered in York. Jason's information may be incorrect WRT to birth place, registrant happened to be travelling there, you name it. With a 100% match on name at FreeBMD, and no William Cooks registered in Sculcoates in the right time frame, and no William Cooks in census returns bn Melton at the right time, that birth cert has got to be worth a shot. -- Regards _ / ) "The blindingly obvious is / _)rad never immediately apparent" We don't need no-one to tell us what's right or wrong The Modern World - The Jam

    3. I think The William J Cook in the 1891 census mentioned by Wendy and Richard is the right guy. I notice his mother was born in Malton, and it is possible that he was born at his grandmothers mothers home (It was very common that a daughter would return home for a birth). His birth being registered in his home parish of Escrick. . Malton is not far from York, though it is a different registration District. BUT his parents were married in 1878 in the Sculcoates District, of which Malton is a part. Though the censuses show his birth and that of his siblings as Escrick. Either way I am sure you will be purchasing the right certificate using the Escrick registration Sheila Coy ----- Original Message ----- From: "Brad Rogers" <brad@fineby.me.uk> To: <eng-east-yorks@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, January 05, 2008 6:35 PM Subject: Re: [ENG-EAST-YORKS] Need some help obtaining a name..... > On Sat, 5 Jan 2008 18:11:00 -0000 > "Sheila Coy" <sheila@coy-home.fsnet.co.uk> wrote: > > Hello Sheila, > >> If he was born in Melton, why was he registered in York?
