Friends, Could anyone suggest a reason for Christmas day weddings in 1887? Seems a strange day? Doesn't seem the bride was pregnant (no record of any children born until 3 years later) Thank you and regards Deirdra
Hello Deirdra, It was probably the only day they had free... holidays and days off were few and far between back then. Kindest regards, Josephine, Ontario Canada.p.s. I have several in my tree who were also married on that day for the same reason! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Deirdra Pickering" <dpickering@eircom.net> To: <eng-east-yorks@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, January 30, 2008 3:47 PM Subject: [ENG-EAST-YORKS] Why a Christmas day wedding? > Friends, > > Could anyone suggest a reason for Christmas day weddings in 1887? > Seems a strange day? Hello Deirdra Our ancestors who were servants had few holidays and one of them would be Christmas Day, so perhaps that explains weddings on 25th December. They also didn't have to pay so for the poorer people this was a great bonus. I have quite a few weddings & baptisms on Christmas Day in my family. I didn't know it was free for poor people - that's interesting. I think another reason is probably that Christmas was not celebrated as now. It was really a special religious day when people would go to church then go about their daily life much as usual.
