The militia were sent from all over the north of England to the east coast of Yorkshire to defend against possible attack by the French. My ancestor John Widdall of Oldham was in the Lancashire militia, married a Beverley girl in1799 & joined the East Yorks militia. I just want to thank everyone who contributed info on the Dunn line from East Riding. Especially Graham...thanks so much! Does anyone know what historical occurrance may have caused the Irish to move to England during the 14th or 15th century? I know that everyone in my Dunn lineage has always claimed to be Irish, but I have a direct link to the Dunn's in Brandesburton [abt 1545] so am wondering when the Irish may have left Ireland for England. If anyone needs a lookup here in Texas, USA just send out a holler and I would be glad to look something up for you.
