Hi All, Has anyone come across a Marmaduke WILES from the East Riding? I have uncovered several now, earliest one is a marriage in 1728 in Hessle, right through to one who was killed in the first world war. There seems to be three main 'clans', one located in Birdlington and Barmston, one in Cranswick / Driffield / North Frodingham, and one in South Cave. I am directly related to those from the Frodingham area, but have linked this clan to the Bridlington clan. I have not yet made a connection with the South Cave clan, but due to the number of uncommon Christian names which appear in all three clans, I am sure there is a link. Has anyone researched the WILES family from Frodingham or Cranswick and are able to untangle this knot? Any help gratefully received. Tim Hutchinson Beverley, E. Yorkshire
Tim I have a couple of Wiles names. The first is Mary Wiles born 1814 at Great Cowden. Mary became pregnant and took George Dixon to court. The court told him to pay 1s 6d a week (detauils in East Riding archives). Instead of paying that he married her! The other Wiles I have is Mary's father William born 1786 d. 1860. Somehow I have omitted to show his birth place. I will be doing some checking on this. William married Ann Ockleton in 1813 in Aldborough. Guess these are not in your areas of search?
