Given that one baptism was C of E and the other was Methodist, it is certainly possible for a child to be baptised twice, once in each denomination. Note that he was about 7 the second time. Perhaps this marked the family's acceptance into the Hull church. Marriage records for non-conformist churches like Primitive Methodist are not likely to exist too early. Before 1837 all marriages ( except Quaker and Jew) had to be in the C of E. After 1837, the Registrar usually attended at non-conformist churches so the records will be at the Register office where you can only access the information by buying a certificate. You might track down the Registrars Notice Book which sometimes exist for a district - at least 7 exist for some parts of Wiltshire. Try solicitors collections for these. Good luck. Thanks for this. It would explain why the Mill Street Methodist birth records were on the IGI but not the marriage records. Presumably then, they were married in a C of E church, and I will just have to keep on looking. Although I'm beginning to wonder if they were married at all.....!! Also a good explanation for why John was baptised twice, something I have wondered about for a long time. Quoting Jan Holmes <tigerjan775@hotmail.com>: > Thanks for this. It would explain why the Mill Street Methodist birth records > were on the IGI but not the marriage records. At one time, I dont recall the years, that in order to get "Parish Relief" you had to be baptised in the established church. A reason that your ancestors might not show as being married as they might not have been able to afford the fee charged by the minister & the Government. (yes another form of taxation).
